LOS ANGELES - The Point Loma women's basketball team had its best defensive performance of season, holding Cal State LA to 50 points on 31 percent shooting, but the Sea Lions never found the range offensively as they posted a season-low for points and fell 50-36, on Friday (Nov. 28) at the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic.
Â
No Sea Lion scored in double-figures in the contest.
Jessica Escorza had seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Both
Madison West and
Amy Ogren came off the bench to equal her with seven points apiece.
Â
The size of the Golden Eagles (1-2) was too much for the Sea Lions (1-4). They outscored PLNU 26-10 on points in the paint and outrebounded the Sea Lions 44-29, en route to an 11-0 advantage in second chance points. Kaija paced the Golden Eagles and all scorers with 16 points. Kiara Harewood added 13.
Â
PLNU could not take advantage of its stalwart defense which allowed only 19 points in the first half. Point Loma made only 4-of-20 shots in the opening 20 minutes to fall behind 19-12 at intermission. After the break, PLNU whittled down the lead to one point (21-20) on an
Amy Ogren jumper with 14:18 left , but CSULA responded with a 7-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
Â
Point Loma will be back in action tomorrow (Nov. 29) to face Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Thanksgiving Classic at 2:00 p.m.Â
