POMONA, Calif. -
Hayden Lescault hit a driving, spinning, contested layup with 2.5 seconds left to help the Point Loma men's basketball team upset No. 16 Cal Poly Pomona 62-60 on the road on Saturday, Nov. 29.
Â
The Sea Lions (5-0) stayed perfect as they earned their first road victory of the season, but had to come from behind late to keep their record flawless. They trailed by five at the half (28-23) and were down until a pair of free throws by
Marek Klassen tied the game at 50-all with 8:02 remaining.
Â
The teams then traded baskets, and misses, until a layup by CPP's (3-2) Terrence Drisdom again knotted the game at 60-60 with 26 seconds left. PLNU took a timeout and then set up an isolation play for Lescault, who took his defender into the paint, spun away from the pressure and lobbed a floater into the basket for the two-point lead. CPP tried to answer but its half court attempt hit back iron and the Sea Lions claimed the victory.
Â
Sam Okhotin,
Marek Klassen and the 3-pointer were the keys to the Sea Lions' offense. Okhotin led PLNU with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Klassen added 15 points by shooting efficient 4-of-8 from the field. These two also spearheaded a PLNU 3-point attack that went 9-of-19 from long range and outscored CPP by 18 points from behind the arc. Okhotin hit 5 of his 8 3-point attempts and is now 16-of-24 for the season from long range. Klassen also hit three treys and has now made a 3-pointer in 33 straight games.
Â
That shooting was pivotal for the Sea Lions on a night in which CPP outrebounded them 38-28, including 16-8 on the offensive glass. PLNU limited CPP to 39.7 percent shooting while it shot 47.4 percent from the field, including 9-of-19 from 3-point range.
Â
Lescault's game-winner was just his second basket of the game, but he did lead all student-athletes with seven assists.
Judd Welfringer also came through with nine points and a team-leading five rebounds. Jordan Faison paced CPP with 18 points and eight rebounds. Drisdom added 12 as the only other Bronco in double-figures.
Â
Cal Poly Pomona was ranked 16th nationally in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) ranking and third in the West Region. The Sea Lions were the 10th team listed in the 'receiving votes' category in the poll, which was released on Nov. 25th.
