Women's soccer's 11-match winning streak snapped

Box Score

SAN MARCOS- It had been over eight week that the Point Loma women's soccer team has seen a result land anywhere other than the win column, but today the Sea Lions' 11-match winning streak was snapped in a non-conference contest against Cal State San Marcos as Point Loma fell 1-0 on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Paulina Good scored the match's only goal in the 74th minute off a corner kick. Good was able to get free of her marker in the box, elevate and head in the corner kick for the matches' only score.

This result kept CSU San Marcos (10-2-3) undefeated in its last 10 contests. This was the first loss for PLNU (12-3-0), which is ranked No. 7 in the NCAA West Region poll, since falling to Cal State Los Angeles on Sept. 13. It also ended the Sea Lions shutout streak at eight matches and their scoreless streak at 818:20 minutes.

"First half we could tell right away there was a lack of motivation in our girls," Point Loma head coach Tim Hall explained. "There were some emotions coming off the weekend but we just weren't ready to play this team. Cal State San Marcos was fired up for us and outplayed us in the first half."

Point Loma had only one stat on the score sheet at halftime; a corner kick.

"It was a very lackluster first half from us," added Hall.  "They wanted it more and outplayed us. Our defense played well but eventually you can't stop the waves when they keep coming."

In the second half PLNU played better. It outshot CSUSM 7-4 and 3-2 in corner kicks but the Sea Lions just couldn't get that elusive goal.

"We came out well and were all over them in the second half," said Hall. "We had a few chances get knocked out and they executed on their set-piece. It was a very lackluster performance by us and the motivation just didn't seem to be there.

"I am old enough to know I get motivated to play anyone," Hall continued. "The psychological ups and downs are not allowed; you have to go out and play."

Point Loma will travel to California Baptist to close out its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Sea Lions have already clinched the Pacific West Conference Championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA West Regional, however, coach Hall knows his team is not looking passed Saturday.

"I don't think we need to say anything before the California Baptist match," said Hall. "I think the girls will be motivated against CBU because there is that rivalry, the undefeated PacWest season and doing well in this match as we head into the NCAA Regional."
