Women's Basketball

Women look to keep winning streak going at APU


THIS WEEK:
The Point Loma women's basketball team will travel north to face Azusa Pacific in a Pacific West Conference matchup on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1:00 p.m. The Sea Lions are 15-9 on the season and in fourth place in the PacWest standings with an 11-7 record. APU is second in the PacWest standings with a 14-5 conference mark and a 16-7 record overall.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
PLNU rides a six-game winning streak into its game against Azusa Pacific. The Sea Lions are averaging 80 points per game during their winning streak while allowing their opponents just 61.3 ppg. As a team, PLNU ranks amongst the PacWest leaders in a number of defensive categories. Point Loma leads the conference in opponent field goal percentage (.359) and blocks (5.0). PLNU also ranks second in steals per game (11.7) and points allowed per game (64.9). Offensively, the Sea Lions rank third in 3-pointers per game (7.4) and 3-point percentage.

Jessica Escorza has returned from injury and taken over the team scoring lead with 15.1 ppg. Callie Rhoads ranks ninth in the conference with 14.1 ppg. Center Abby Boorman is leading the league with 3.1 blocks per game and ranks third with 8.9 rebounds. Savannah Erskine is pacing the PacWest in assists (6.0), steals (3.9) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9) while averaging 11.1 ppg.

A LOOK AT THE COUGARS:
Azusa Pacific is 16-7 on the season, 14-3 in the PacWest and 9-3 at home. APU has three student-athletes ranked in the top 6 in the PacWest in scoring. Sendy Valles leads the team with 16.2 ppg, followed by Kelly Hardeman (14.8) and Allison Greene (14.5). The Cougars lead the PacWest in steals per game (11.9) and opponent scoring average (62.2).

NEXT WEEK:
Point Loma will close out the 2013-14 regular season next Wednesday, Feb. 26 when it host California Baptist at 5:30 p.m.

POINT TV PICKS UP COVERAGE:
For those fans which are unable to attend the game next week between PLNU and CBU will be happy to hear that the game will be covered by Point TV and will be available to viewing on a tape-delay following the contest on Channel 23. The women's game will be called by Greta Wall and Macy Douglas. The men's game will be called by Jacob Roth and Greta Wall.
