Sea Lions fall short to Lancers on Senior Night

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - California Baptist showed why they are the 2013-14 Pacific West Conference champions and have only one loss on the season, as they fought back from a halftime deficit to defeat the Point Loma men's basketball team 67-58 and spoil Senior Night for the Sea Lions.

CBU is now 24-1 on the season and 18-1 in the PacWest. The Lancers have won eight games in a row since suffering their only loss of the season at Azusa Pacific. This game wrapped up the regular season for the Sea Lions (15-11, 10-10 PacWest). They will continue play next week at the NCCAA West Regional. Game times and opponents are yet to be determined.

Hayden Lescault paced three Sea Lions in double-figures with 14 points. He also added three assists and four steals. Mike Planeta and Junior Morgan both came off the bench to score 12 points.

CBU's Ryan Berg led all scorers with 20 points. Three other Lancers also joined him with double-figures in the scoring column.

PLNU jumped on Cal Baptist from the opening tip to build a 24-10 lead 12 minutes into the game. CBU fought back and cut the Sea Lions' lead to five (28-23) at the break. After the Lancers scored a 3-pointer to open the second half PLNU built its lead back as high as seven points but CBU continued to chip away at the Sea Lions' lead and took a one-point advantage (40-39) with 12:20 remaining for their first lead since it was 2-0.

Point Loma would never again lead in the game. It cut the lead to one points (51-50) on a 3-pointer by Marek Klassen with 6:52 left and to three points (61-58) with 1:17 remaining but they could not regain the lead and fell 67-58.

After PLNU held CBU to just 23 points on 32 percent shooting in the first half, Cal Baptist then found its offensive rhythm in second half en route to outscoring Point Loma 44-30 and shooting 50 percent. CBU also held a 26-14 advantage in points off turnovers.

PLNU will now await its opportunity to play in the NCCAA West Regional. Its seed and game times are yet to be determined.
