SAN DIEGO -
Jessica Escorza recorded the second triple-double in Point Loma women's basketball history as the Sea Lions outscored California Baptist 54-31 in the second half to defeat the Lancers, 91-84, on Wednesday (Feb. 26).
This was the eighth straight win for Point Loma (17-9, 13-7 PacWest) which moved into third place in the Pacific West Conference standings, a half-game ahead of CBU and Hawaii Pacific. The loss snaps the Lancers' (14-11, 12-7 PacWest) four-game winning streak.
Escorza joined legendary Sea Lion, and current assistant coach,
Colleen Planeta as the only two student-athletes in PLNU history to record a triple-double. Escorza came off the bench to score 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists in the victory. She was also a key factor in the Sea Lions' second half surge. She scored 14 of her 16 points after half and six of her 10 assists.
Erin Andersen and
Callie Rhoads each added a game-high 21 points for Point Loma on Senior Night for both student-athletes. Andersen just missed a double-double as she also added nine rebounds. Fellow senior
Savannah Erskine also had a double-double of her own with 6 points and nine assists, while adding six steals.
Erin Asher paced four Lancers in double-figures with 20 points. Ashley Jones also added 17 points, including four 3-pointers, off the bench.
This was truly a tale of two halves tonight for the Sea Lions. In the first half they allowed CBU to shoot 57 percent in the first half and build a 52-37 lead. However, PLNU would not go away that easily in its final home game of the season. They opened the second half on a 13-2 run to cut the Lancers' lead to four (54-50) in just over five minutes of play. The Sea Lions would take the lead for good at 67-66 as Escorza knocked down a pair of free throws with 7:53 remaining.
PLNU was up by four with 5:32 remaining when Erskine picked up her fifth foul and the Sea Lions turned to the combination of Escorza, Rhoads and Andersen down the stretch. The trio scored all 17 of the Sea Lions' points in the final five minutes, including Andersen who had nine of her 21 points in the final five minutes. In the second half, PLNU stepped up on both sides of the ball. It held CBU to just 31 points as they shot just 27 percent from the field and only 2-of-15 from behind the arc.
Prior to the game PLNU honored its six seniors;
Carlotta Kloppenburg,
Abby Boorman,
Savannah Erskine,
Callie Rhoads,
Kiley Berlinski and
Erin Andersen.
Point Loma will now await the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) West Regional. The Sea Lions have already earned their bid into the regional but must wait for the outcome of a few games in the region to determine their seed.
