Pair of early goals lift Golden Eagles over PLNU

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Cal State Los Angeles netted a pair of first half goals to win a non-conference match over the Point Loma women's soccer team on Saturday, Sept. 13.

The Golden Eagles (4-0-0) of the California Collegiate Athletic Association remained undefeated with the win, while the Sea Lions dropped to 1-2-0.

Cal State LA got on the board early on a goal by Joanna Espinoza in the 6th minute. The Golden Eagles would tack on another score in the 38th minute when PLNU's goalie Lupe Herrera deflected Victoria Arredondo's shot but could not keep it out of the net to make it 2-0.

"In the first half we just did not show up," said Point Loma head coach Tim Hall. "We played below our abilities and put ourselves in a hole. The match was basically determined at the half."

Despite the 2-0 deficit the Sea Lions played much better in the second half, outshooting the Golden Eagles 7-3, with six of those shots coming on goal. But it was just too little too late for PLNU facing a quality squad on the road.

"We came out and played to our ability in the second half," said coach Hall. "It would have been a whole new game if we would have played the way we did in the second half all 90 minutes.

"This is still a loss, and it hurts, but we learned some good things going forward," Hall concluded.

Easton Kawawaki paced PLNU with three shots on goal. Ariel Oriarte and Lupe Herrera each played one half in goal and each made one save. Yi Du had six saves in net for the Golden Eagles.

Point Loma will return home to face UC San Diego in a non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m. The Sea Lions will then open Pacific West Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m. against Fresno Pacific.
