Box Score SAN DIEGO - Coach
Tim Hall has been bragging about his freshman class for months now, and Point Loma women's soccer fans finally got to see exactly what he was talking about as freshmen
Sami Swanson and
Jennifer Ballez each scored in a 2-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the season opener (Sept. 4).
Â
It was Swanson that put the Sea Lions on the board to break the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute off a cross from
Dottie Rhoten. Swanson snuck behind the defense on the far side of the box to head in the cross that soared perfectly over the scrum in the middle for her first career goal.
Â
It would be
Amanda Mitchell that provided the helping hand on
Jennifer Ballez's goal in the 79th minute. Mitchell took a defender down the right side of the field and laid a perfect pass over to Ballez, who has spirited down the right seam past all the other Toros, for clinching goal.
Â
Point Loma's defense was solid throughout the match to record a shutout in the opener.
Lupe Herrera made three saves but two came from over 20 yards. She was forced to make her toughest save of the match just two minutes after Swanson's goal. The Toros had a good look on a header from close range but Herrera made a sprawling kick save to preserve the shutout.
Â
The Point Loma women's soccer team will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 6 against another California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent, Sonoma State, at 1:00 p.m.
