Box Score SAN DIEGOÂ - Point Loma soccer fans were reminded just how cruel the sport can be as Sonoma State's Sara Van Wagoner scored with less than two minutes left in the second overtime period to hand the PLNU women's soccer team a 1-0 loss on Saturday, Sept. 6.
Â
PLNU (1-1-0) looked to be in control after picking up its intensity in the second half and the overtime periods but the Sea Lions just could not get a ball in the net against the Seawolves (2-0-0) in their first loss of the season.
Â
"The second half and the two overtimes the women played very well and the momentum shifted to us," said PLNU head coach
Tim Hall. "Sonoma State is a very good team and that is the level we are going to have to play at to win our conference and go further into the postseason."
Â
PLNU had a couple of chances inside the box in the second half but were always just a touch off from putting one in the back of the net. However, coach Hall believes his team was able to take many positives out of today's game.
Â
"We are a young team but we grew up a lot today playing against a very gritty team," said Hall. "To lose like that was unfortunate but I don't consider it a loss for the team's psyche. I was extremely proud of them.
Â
"We played some good soccer today," Hall continued. "We were solid defensively and offensively we created some chances. I know in my head it is a positive even though in my heart it is a tough one to lose."
Â
Ariel Oriarte made four saves in goal for the Sea Lions, while Allison Hadidian had three for the Seawolves en route to earning the shutout.
Â
Point Loma's next match will be next Saturday, Sept. 13 at Cal State Los Angeles at 4:00 p.m.
Â
"We have to come out with the same intensity (against CSULA)," Hall explained. "But the main thing for this team is the desire and belief that they can come out and play anybody."
