Box Score SAN DIEGO -
Heather Leavitt slammed down 12 kills and the Point Loma volleyball team hit .267 to sweep Cal State Monterey Bay in a non-conference contest at the Seaside Invitational late Friday night, 3-0.
Â
The Sea Lions (1-1) had to wait two and a half hours from their regularly scheduled start time to begin due to earlier tournament matches running late. But the 10:00 p.m. start time did not faze PLNU in earning the straight set victory over the California Collegiate Athletic Association member and West Region opponent.
Â
Point Loma had to fight hard to hold CSUMB off late to win the first set 26-24. In the second the Sea Lions gained separation by holding the Otters to a .069 hitting percentage en route to a 25-22 set victory. Then they finished Cal State Monterey Bay off in three with a 25-16 victory.
Â
Bethany Mandon, a freshman middle blocker from Rocklin, Calif., had her best game as a Sea Lion with eight kills and just one error in 14 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. PLNU also got nine kills from
Delaney McCraney and seven more from
Briana Vieth. Christian Fisher was the only student-athlete in the match with double-figure digs with 10.
Savannah Wedemeyer had 32 assists.
Â
"We came out with a different intensity (this evening)," said first year PLNU head coach
Jonathan Scott. "We played harder and competed in every area of the game rather than just the fun areas.
Â
"Even though our first loss did not feel good it was good for us," Scott continued. "It gives us things we need to focus on going forward." Â
Â
Jessica Malcolm paced the Otters with 12 kills. For the match Point Loma hit .267 compared to CSUMB's .163. Â
Â
Point Loma will be back in action at the Seaside Invitational for another pair of matches. The Sea Lions will face Saginaw Valley State (2-0) at 1:30 p.m. before close out the tournament against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:30 p.m.Â
