SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's basketball team had 10 student-athletes in the scoring column and the Sea Lions committed a season-low nine turnovers to defeat Dominican (CA) 81-56 on Monday, Jan. 12.
This was PLNU's third win in its last four contests. The Sea Lions are now 6-8 on the season and in sixth in the PacWest standings at 4-3. The loss was the third straight for the Penguins which saw their record fall to 6-8 on the season and to 3-5 in the PacWest.
Ten Sea Lions scored in the game.
Madison West led all scorers with 19 points. She went 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc in 23 minutes played. Coming off her PacWest Freshman of the Week performance
Roya Rustamzada filled up the box score with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals. She and
Jessica Escorza tied for the team-lead with seven boards apiece.
Sydney Tonack added 13 points.
PLNU had assists on 24 of its 31 baskets, while committing a season-low nine turnovers. Meanwhile, the Sea Lions had 16 steals, four by
Riley Abraham, and forced DUC into 23 turnovers. Allyssa Weatherd led the Penguins with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
The Sea Lions also hit a season-best 13 treys in the game as they shot 43 percent from long range (13-of-30).
Alex Brunk was 3-of-5 from 3-point range as she and West combined for eight of the Sea Lions' 13 treys.
Point Loma will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 14 when it hosts Academy of Art at 5:30 p.m.
