Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Lancer run dooms Sea Lions

SAN DIEGO - California Baptist outscored the Point Loma women's basketball team 18-3 in the final eight minutes of the game to snap the Sea Lions' five-game winning streak with an 80-70 win on Saturday, Jan. 24.

CBU (15-3, 8-2 PacWest) avenged its first loss last week to the Sea Lions, which handed the Lancers their first home loss of the season. The loss evens PLNU's record at 9-9 on the season and places Point Loma in a tie for fourth in the PacWest standings with Azusa Pacific at 7-4.

Riley Abraham paced PLNU with a career-high 18 points. She was 8-of-11 from the field and also had four rebounds. Jessica Escorza scored 17 points, added five rebounds and six assists. Madison West also reached double-figures with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Sydney Tonack led Point Loma with nine rebounds.

Courtney Nelson's 22 points paced four Lancers in double-figures. Cassidy Mihalko also had 21 points and Megan Brown added a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.

Point Loma led 44-35 at the half and went up by 12 points at the 11:28 mark in the second half on a basket by Riley Abraham but that lead would be short lived. CBU scored 11 straight points to cut the Sea Lions' lead to one (63-62). Escorza then made a pair of free throws and West hit a layup with 5:36 left to end the run but this would be Point Loma's final basket of the game. CBU was 5-for-9 down the stretch to overcome the Sea Lions' lead and earn the 10-point victory.

Point Loma will now head on the road to the Bay Area to face three opponents on Jan. 29-Feb. 2. PLNU will open with Holy Names, and then face Notre Dame de Namur and the Academy of Art.
