SAN DIEGO - Concordia (CA) got a goal from Taylor Thurmond in the 64th minute to edge the Point Loma women's soccer team 1-0 in a battle for first place in the PacWest Conference (Oct. 17).
The loss snaps the Sea Lions' (8-4-0, 5-2-0 PacWest) three-match winning streak, in which they outscored their opponents 6-1. The win lifts CUI to sole possession of first place in the PacWest with 18 points. Concordia leads PLNU, Dixie State and California Baptist, which are all tied for second place, by three points in the standings with 18 points. The Eagles have now won four straight games.
Thurmond's goal broke the scoreless tie and snapped the Sea Lions' streak of 284 consecutive scoreless minutes. She received a pass from Miranda Canales on the left side of the 18-yard box and rocketed a shot to the top right corner of the net. The ball bounced right off the post and into the net for the match's lone goal.
"Their goal came on an error by us," said Hall. "It was a great shot by her but we gave the ball away right there. Our women didn't play bad today but it is one of those situations where we made an error, they score and the game is over."
That one mistake really hurt as PLNU outplayed CUI the majority of the match but were unable to notch a goal. This included outshooting the Eagles 9-7 in the match.
"I felt we had a very good first half and we outplayed them but when you let a team hang around that long they come back and get you.," said Hall. "
Amanda Mitchell's shot hit the post and their goalie made a huge save on a free kick against
Shelby Murphy. They finished their chances and we didn't.
"In the second half it got more evened out, and they were maybe even a little more physical than we were," added Hall. "It was two really good teams going at it today. It showed us there is no team we can't be successful against. I am proud of where we are. We are still in (the PacWest race).
"I am disappointed in the loss," he continued. "I feel we should have got that game but big credit to them."
The Eagles' goalkeeper Darby Clements made five saves in the win.
Ariel Oriarte had a season-best six saves for PLNU. This was just the fifth goal Point Loma has allowed in 12 matched.
The Sea Lions will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 22 when they face Academy of Art on the road at 10:30 a.m.
