SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's soccer team saw their 15-match PacWest unbeaten streak come to an end with a 1-0 decision against California Baptist on Saturday (Oct. 3).
PLNU (5-3-0, 2-1-0 PacWest) had not suffered a loss in conference dating back to the end of the 2013 season, and had only one tie. That tie came against CBU (3-5-1, 3-1-0) last year in the regular season finale to deny PLNU the chance to be the first team ever to be perfect in PacWest play, and again today the Lancers were a thorn in the Sea Lions' side.
Desarae Felix scored the match's lone goal in the 27th minute when she dribbled the ball out of the right corner to the top of the box then went against her momentum and fired a shot into top right of the net.
"That goal was unfortunate to give up because it was off a defensive error on our part, but you always have to give credit to the kid that puts the ball in the net," said Hall. "It was a good job by them and a bad job by us. It set the stage for Point Loma playing uphill all day."
PLNU had numerous chances but never found the equalizer. The Sea Lions outshot CBU 22-4, including 5-1 on shots on goal. Each time they got a good shot it seemed that the Lancers' goal keeper Sara Escobedo came up with a huge play as she finished the game with five saves.
"Their goal keeper was the superstar of the game," Hall said. "Without her we win that game, but she was big time today."
Despite the loss Hall was still pleased with the effort of his team.
"The girls played well today and they worked hard," he said. "The stats show that we were in that game but it was unfortunate because those things happen when you give up an early goal.
"Soccer is that cruel game that can sting you or be good to you (in close matches) but today we were on the other side of it," Hall added.
The goal snapped a three-match shutout for PLNU and goal keeper
Ariel Oriarte. All three of Point Loma's losses this season have been 1-0.
The Sea Lions will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 6 when they host Hawaii Pacific (4-4, 1-2 PacWest) at 1:00 p.m.
"Our girls know what happened today and it is good we can get back out there quickly," Hall said. "They know they played well and are a good soccer team. If Hawaii Pacific rolled in here right now we would be ready to go.
"We are still right in the mix of this conference battle," he added, "and it is probably going right down to the last week."
