SAN DIEGO - With their season on the line, the Point Loma volleyball team had one of its best matches of the season to defeat PacWest-leader California Baptist in four sets 25-14, 29-31, 32-30 and 25-21 (Oct. 31).
The victory keeps Point Loma (15-8, 9-5 PacWest) in the heart of the PacWest race. PLNU is now just a game back of California Baptist (17-5, 10-4 PacWest) and two behind PacWest-leaders Dixie State (13-8, 11-3 PacWest). Point Loma is fourth in the PacWest standings.
Heather Leavitt led the Sea Lions with 31 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. It was her second-highest total of the season, and the sixth time she has posted at least 20 kills in a match.
Savannah Wedemeyer added 54 assists over the three sets to go along with five kills (no errors), seven digs and two blocks. The Sea Lions also received 13 kills from
Bethany Mandon and a match-best 16 digs from
Christin Fisher.
PLNU's true edge came in the service category where it had nine aces to the Lancers' two. CBU relied heavily on Jenna Perry who recorded 25 of their 59 kills.
This was truly a grind-it-out victory as the Sea Lions. PLNU had to play multiple set with extra points and three of the four sets were decided by two points. The match also featured 42 tie scores and 16 lead changes.
The Sea Lions opened the match on 6-0 run to take the first set. After dropping the second set in extra points, PLNU overcame CBU in extra points 32-20 to take full control of the momentum.
The Point Loma volleyball team will now begin a five-match road trip before coming home to close out their regular season on Saturday, Nov. 21. The road trip will start next week with journeys to Azusa Pacific (Nov. 3) and to Dixie State (Nov. 7).
