Three Sea Lions score 20 as PLNU defeats CSUDH

POMONA, Calif. - Three Sea Lions scored over 20 points in the season opener as the Point Loma women's basketball team defeated the defending CCAA-champions, Cal State Dominguez Hills, in overtime 84-78 at the PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge (Nov. 13).
 
Roya Rustamzada led Point Loma (1-0) with 28 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. She went 10-of-20 from the field and 7-of-9 at the free throw line. Madison West notched 22 points, including hitting 6-of-10 shots from behind the 3-point line. Sydney Tonack gave the Sea Lions a presence inside with 20 point on 8-of-11 shooting.
 
Alex Brunk had the first double-double of her career with 12 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds. She also came through with perhaps the most clutch points of the game as she stepped to the free throw line with 00:01 seconds left and knocked down three free throws to send the game to overtime.
 
In the extra frame, PLNU then scored the first six points and finished the game off from the free throw line to earn the neutral court victory.
 
The Sea Lions came out of the game on fire, scoring 18 of the first 21 points. Rustamzada had 12 points during the Sea Lions' 18-3 run. The Toros whittled the lead away and tied the game at 35-35 going into the half.
 
Breanne Garcia had 30 points for CSUDH (1-3) to lead four Toros in double-figures. Kielyn Wilson had 13 points and 19 rebounds.
 
Point Loma shot 46 percent from the field, including 55 percent in the second half. They limited CSUDH to 40 percent shooting. PLNU also turned the ball over only 13 times and went 18-of-23 from the free throw line. PLNU also assisted on 20 of its 29 baskets.
 
Point Loma will face tournament host Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 6:00 p.m. to complete the PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge.
