Men's Basketball

Basketball host annual Homecoming games Saturday

Homecoming tomorrow
The Point Loma men's and women's basketball teams will host their annual Homecoming contests on Saturday, Nov. 21. The women's will tip things off at 6:00 p.m. against Northwest Nazarene. They will be followed by the men taking on Cal State East Bay at 8:00 p.m.

Preview of the women's game
PLNU: The Point Loma women's basketball team is 2-0 on the season after picking up a pair of impressive victories last week in the PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge. The Sea Lions took down two teams that played in the 2014-15 NCAA West Regional, including defending CCAA Champions Cal State Dominguez Hills in overtime 84-78. In the game, PLNU trailed by three points with one second left but Alex Brunk sank all three free throws to send the game to overtime where the Sea Lions outscored the Toros 10-4.
 
Roya Rustamzada leads PLNU with 23.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game. She just missed a triple-double against CSUDH when she posted 28 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Madison West is second on the team with 17.0 points per game. She has averaged four 3-pointers per game and is shooting .471 from behind the arc. Alex Brunk is also averaging 17.0 ppg and is leading the team with 9.5 rebounds per game. She posted a double-double against CSUSH. Sydney Tonack is also in double-figures with 12.0 ppg. As a team, PLNU is averaging 78 points per game and shooting .482 from the field. They have limited their opponents to a .416 shooting percentage and just 66 ppg.
 
NNU: Northwest Nazarene is 1-2 on the season after dropping its last two matches. The Crusaders are averaging 81.7 points per game and are led by Kate Cryderman with 15.5 ppg. She is one of four Crusaders in double-figures. Lexi Tubbs (14.7 ppg), Ellie Logan (14.3 ppg) and Taylor Simmons (11.0 ppg) are also in double-figures this season. Tubbs leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per contest.
 
Preview of the men's game
PLNU: The Point Loma men's basketball team is 1-2 on the season. The Sea Lions are averaging 67.7 points per game and are shooting .483 percent from the field, including .381 percent from 3-point range. Point Loma has an assist on .728 percent of their baskets, but are also turning the ball over five more times a game than their opponent.
 
Sam Okhotin leads PLNU in scoring with 16.3 points per game. He is connecting on .486 percent for his shots from the field and .458 percent from 3-point range. Freshman Josh Rodriguez, the reigning PacWest Freshman of the Week, is the only other Sea Lion in double-figures. He is averaging 14.0 ppg, to go along with 4.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game. Judd Welfringer is leading the squad with 7.0 rebounds per game.
 
CSUEB: The Pioneers are 1-1 on the season, after dropping their road opener to California Baptist the other night. CSUEB is averaging 66.0 ppg and is shooting .434 percent from the field. They are also being outrebounded by their opponents by 8.5 per game. Jalen Richard leads the team with 17.0 ppg. Alez Manu is also in double-figures with 10.5 ppg. Jack Pasquini paces the squad with 7.5 rebounds.
 
Next games
The Point Loma men's and women's basketball teams will also be home this Tuesday, Nov. 24, when they host another doubleheader. The women will face Seattle Pacific at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men taking on Young Harris at 7:30 p.m.
