Sea Lions send seniors away with 2-0 victory

OAKLAND, Calif. - Each of the Sea Lions five seniors played a critical role in the Point Loma men's soccer team's 2-0 victory over Holy Names to end their collegiate careers on a high note.

The Sea Lions (9-5-3, 8-3-2 PacWest) went unbeaten in their last four contests and finished the season fourth in the PacWest standings with 26 points. This was the best finish for these seniors ever in the PacWest, topping their sixth place finish last year. Holy Names (2-15-1, 1-11-1 PacWest) ended its season on an eight-match losing skid.

After a scoreless first half, the seniors seemed to realize they would only be on the field for 45 more minutes in their careers, and each stepped up their game. First it was Matt Steinhaus connecting with Nico Tagaloa on a cross for the first goal of the game in the 70th minute. Steinhaus' first assist of the season led directly to the game-winning goal as Tagaloa took over the team-lead with six goals on the season.

Then Daniel ten Bosch extended the lead to 2-0 with an insurance goal in the 75th minute. He got a pass from Taylor Kang-Illescas in crowded space within the box and was able to corral the ball and knock it into the net for his fifth goal of the season. Those five goals matched a career-high for ten Bosch, which he set his sophomore season.

Avrin Yakou, Lewis Grant and the rest of the PLNU defense continued their strong play and kept HNU out of the net for its eighth shutout of the season.

"I was proud of all the seniors," said PLNU head coach Phil Wolf. "Steinhaus delivered the first cross to Nico, Daniel got a goal, Manu played a big role, Lewis as well and Avrin got the clean sheet. I was proud of all those guys. They finished their career well."

PLNU was outplayed in the first half, with HNU outshooting them 5-2. Things turned in the second half as Point Loma was more aggressive, but everything changed with Holy Names' Antonio Chavarria picked up a red card in the 60th minute. After that PLNU scored its only two goals on the match in the next 15 minutes.

"We were not at our best in the first half," Wolf added. "Holy Names did end up taking a red card (60th minute) and that is what really changed the game. After that we dominated with the extra man and they sort of rolled over.

"Happy the seniors got to end on a positive note," concluded Wolf. "This was a season of 'almosts' and hopefully we can build on it for next year."
