Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Point Loma keeps rolling

SAN DIEGO - Hayden Lescault scored 19 points, Judd Welfringer added 17 and the Point Loma men's basketball team never trailed en route to an 84-65 victory over Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

The Sea Lions (18-5, 11-5 PacWest) have now won five straight Pacific West Conference games to tighten their grip on fifth place in the conference standings. PLNU is just one win behind conference leaders BYU-Hawaii (12-2 PacWest) and three in the loss column. Tonight's loss evens Hawaii Hilo's season record at 10-10 on the season (6-8 PacWest).

Lescault scored 11 of his 19 points in the first half to help PLNU jump out of a 33-20 halftime lead. He went 6-of-9 from the field and 6-of-9 at the free throw line. He also tied for the team-lead with four assists. Welfringer picked up the scoring slack in the second half by scoring 15 of his 17 points. He went 5-of-9 from the field in the half and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. Sam Okhotin also added 12 points.

"Those two (Hayden and Judd) were really good tonight but what I liked was the way the ball was moving and getting to the right guy at the right time," Point Loma head coach Bill Carr explained.

PLNU shot 55 percent in the game, including 63 percent in the second half. The Sea Lions had assists on 15 of their 24 baskets and had just 14 turnovers. PLNU outscored UHH 22-8 in points off turnovers and by 20 points at the free throw line as the Sea Lions went 29-of-44 from the charity stripe.

"Tonight was a good, physical game," said Carr. "We kept our poise, drove the ball at the right times and did a good job scoring around the rim."

PLNU will continue its homestand over the next two weeks. The Sea Lions will host Hawaii Pacific next on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

"We like playing in front of our students and our fans," said Carr. "They have been great for us all year and we hope they come back (during the homestand) and continue to support us."
