PLNU storms back with 6-run 7th to beat #10 UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Point Loma stormed back from a five-run deficit with six runs in the top of the seventh inning to upset local rival and No. 10 nationally ranked UC San Diego on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

This was the fourth straight win for the Sea Lions. They are now 7-2 on the season and 3-0 on the road. UCSD, who moved from No. 15 to No. 10 in the polls this week, is now 7-4 on the season.

Things were not looking good for Point Loma heading into the seventh trailing 7-2, but the guys in the dugout never lost hope, as they scored seven runs with their final nine outs to win this big game.

The rally started as they often do with a leadoff walk. Preston Sands and Trey Hunt started the seventh drawing back-to-back walks before AJ Derr poked a single down the right field line to load the bases. Tyler Baker followed with a walk on eight pitches to force in a run, before Ryan Garcia, Devin Carter and Joseph Keller all singled in runs to bring the Sea Lions within one at 7-6 with the bases still loaded.

PLNU then made a couple of productive outs, something they have been striving to be consistent on all season, to take the lead. First Anthony Torres capitalized on the first pitch he saw by putting it in play to the shortstop to allow Garcia to score and tie the game at 7-7, while all the runners to moved up a base. Connor Larson then gave Point Loma the 8-7 lead with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Carter.

UCSD answered the Sea Lions' rally with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 8-8. But PLNU was undeterred and again mounted a rally in the eighth the retake the lead. Senior Trey Hunt got the rally started with a one-out single up the middle and then went to second on a walk to Derr before both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Garcia then drew a walk to load the bases and Carter came through with the game-winning single on an infield hit to third base to score Hunt with the go-ahead run.

It was then time for the backend of the Sea Lions' bullpen to hold the one-run lead. Senior Mickey Dunleavy got things started in the eighth by striking out the side and then Coleman Huntley III slammed the door in the ninth for his third save of the season.

Alex Leal (1-0) earned his first career win after pitching the seventh inning. Troy Forester (0-1) took the loss for UCSD by allowing a hit, two walks and a run in the eighth. The two teams combined to use 12 pitchers and throw nearly 350 pitches in this nine-inning game.

Seven Sea Lions collected a hit in the contest. Carter went 3-for-5 with two RBI and run scored. Larson also knocked in a pair of runs, had a double and drew a walk. Derr and Hunt each scored twice. Derr also reached base in four of his five plate appearances as he had two hits and two walks.

UCSD built its lead with two runs in the second, three in the third and two in the sixth. Each rally started with a leadoff single. Steven Coe had three RBI to lead the Tritons. Brandon Shirley was 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot and Jack Larsen was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Point Loma will return home to host Bethesda in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 21 starting at 11:00 a.m.
