Lillicrop, Huntley combine on shutout in DH split

OAKLAND - The baseball doubleheader between Point Loma and Holy Names featured strong starting pitching by both teams as the Sea Lions and Hawks split their two-game set. HNU won the opener 3-0 and PLNU took the nightcap by the same score (3-0).

The Sea Lions are now 14-7 on the season and 2-4 in the PacWest. The split keeps Holy Names at .500 on the season (11-11) and moves them to 3-7 in PacWest play.

Game 1
The Point Loma baseball team dropped the opening game of its four-game series with Holy Names, 3-0. Hawks' pitcher Trent Carrier (3-0) threw a shutout against the Sea Lions, allowing just five hits while striking out three. Eric Pierce (3-2) took the loss. He allowed seven hits and two earned runs over five innings.

HNU broke up the scoreless game with two runs in the fifth inning after the Hawks led off the inning with three straight hits. They tacked on one more unearned run in the seventh.

Game 2
Kevin Lillicrop and Coleman Huntley III combined on a seven-inning shutout of the Hawks. Lillicrop went the first six innings. He allowed five hits and four walks, while striking out six. Huntley then threw a scoreless seventh inning for his PacWest-leading fifth save of the season. This was the Sea Lions' third combined shutout of the season.

AJ Derr came through with the run-scoring hit the Sea Lions had been seeking throughout the doubleheader in the top of the third. Anthony Torres and Preston Sands both singled early in the inning and both were standing in scoring position with two out when Derr came to the plate and singled to left field to bring in both runners. PLNU tacked on one more in the fourth on a double by Kellen Sheppard to drive in Ryan Garcia.

Ricardo Torres (1-3) took the loss for Holy Names despite going the distance. He allowed five hits and three runs (all earned) while striking out five and walking none.
