AZUSA, Calif. - For the first time this season the Point Loma baseball team dropped back-to-back games. The Sea Lions fell 5-0 to Azusa Pacific and Josh Staumont in the opener and then lost game two 14-3 after an early offensive outburst by the Cougars.
These were the opening games of PacWest play for PLNU (12-5, 0-2 PacWest). Azusa Pacific is now 14-3 on the season and second in the conference standings at 5-1.
Game 1Josh Staumont and three relievers combined to throw Azusa Pacific's first no-hitter since 1980 in the 5-0 win for the Cougars. Staumont went the first 6.2 innings striking out 14 and walking four. He gave way to Billy Sanford for the final batter in the seventh inning before Josh Grajeda and Jonathan Velasco went one inning apiece to complete the combined no-hitter.
Point Loma had a threat in the second and the third when Staumont was a bit wild. He walked the bases loaded with two outs in the second but was able to get a strikeout to end the threat. The Sea Lions best chance to score came in the third with APU up just 1-0.
AJ Derr was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and quickly advanced to third with two straight wild pitches.
Tyler Baker then walked on four straight pitches to put runners at the corners. Staumont then struck out two straight batters before getting a ground out to end the threat.
Eric Pierce (3-1) took his first loss of the season for the Sea Lions. He grinded through the first five innings allowing 11 hits, but just two runs. He struck out five and walked one. Staumont improved to 3-0 for the Cougars.
Game 2Azusa Pacific jumped on Point Loma with four runs in the first and another four runs in the second, and rode that to a 14-3 victory.
Daniel Martin led the Cougars going 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored. The 2-3-4 hitters for APU were 10-for-15 with eight runs scored and 10 RBI.
Tyler Baker and
Matt Jervis both had multi-hit games for Point Loma. Jervis was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.
AJ Derr reached base three times with a hit and a pair of walks. He also had an RBI and a run scored.
Jacob Cage (2-1) earned the win for APU after getting through five innings allowing eight hits, four walks and three runs while striking out four.
Kevin Lillicrop (1-3) was saddled with the loss.
