SAN DIEGO - When
Ryan Garcia singled in
Trey Hunt in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Point Loma baseball team to a 2-1 win over Hawaii Pacific in game two he probably never realized he had just put this 2015 team in the record books for the longest winning streak in school history.
Â
Garcia's walk-off single lifted the Sea Lions to their 13th straight win (all in conference play), topping the previous school records of 11 consecutive victories on both 2003 and 2009. The win in the first game actually gave this team the record as
Eric Pierce looked strong as the No. 1 starter, and
Joseph Keller drove in three RBI and Garcia knocked in two in a 7-1 Sea Lions' victory.
Â
Point Loma is now 26-7 on the season and in second place in the PacWest at 14-4. The losses were the 10th straight for HPU with fell to 12-15 on the season and to 9-13 in the PacWest.
Â
Game 1Eric Pierce (6-2) went seven strong innings, allowing six hits and just one run while striking out three and the 2-5 hitters in the Sea Lions lineup went 7-for-13 with five RBI and six runs scored to lead PLNU to the 7-1 victory. Pierce's six wins are tied for the PacWest lead.
Â
Joseph Keller helped open the flood gates for Point Loma with a bases loaded double in the fourth inning. Â PLNU entered the inning without a hit but a walk to
AJ Derr and back-to-back infield singles by
Ryan Garcia and
Devin Carter set up a four-run inning. First Keller drove in two on a bases loaded double, and then
Connor Larson brought in Carter on a sac fly and
Matt Jervis capped off the scoring with a single to score Keller. Point Loma added three insurance runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Garcia and a sac fly by Keller. Both scoring innings for the Sea Lions started with a walk.
Â
The Sharks had a chance to get to Pierce in the first inning as they loaded the bases with one out, but he was able to get the ground ball and
Matt Jervis started to great 4-63 double play by short-hopping the ball to get the Sea Lions out of the jam.
Â
Derr was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Garcia finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Keller knocked in three RBI and Carter added a pair of hits.
Â
Tyler Tokunaga was 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot for the Sharks. Harley Holt (3-4) was saddled with the loss after giving up six hits and all seven runs in four innings of work.
Â
Game 2Ryan Garcia's game-winning hit will be the play that fans will look back at and remember but the play of the game in the Sea Lions' 2-1 win was a one-out, double-play inducing ground ball on the first pitch out of the bullpen by PLNU reliever
Mickey Dunleavy that was the decisive play in the Sea Lions 2-1 win over the Sharks.
Â
Dunleavy came out of the pen with little room for error as HPU had just tied the game at 1-1 and had runners at first and second with just one down and their cleanup hitter at the plate. The Sharks' hitter hit it sharply into the hole between shortstop and third base where
Tyler Baker made a play moving away from second. He had the chance to get the lead runner at third but boldly turned and first to second baseman
Matt Jervis who made a great turn to first baseman
Ryan Garcia to complete the double play and get out of the inning. He would go on to pitch two more scoreless inning to setup the chance for Garcia's dramatics.
Â
Just as both scoring chances began for the Sea Lions in the first game this one also started with a walk as
Trey Hunt battled back from an 0-2 count to coax the base on balls. PLNU then failed to move Hunt to second with the next two hitters and he stood at first with two out when
AJ Derr drew the walk to push Hunt into scoring position for Garcia. Garcia fell behind in the count 1-2 and fouled off a pitch but then he saw the one he wanted and line it up the middle. Hunt raced around third with coach
Joe Schaefer and his teammates encouraging him to pick up the speed. The throw was up the line and Hunt was able to slide in for the game-winning run as his teammates rushed him and out to second base to celebrate with Garcia.
Â
"Mickey has been in our program for a while and he has had some highs and some lows but he is finally settled into the perfect role," said Point Loma head coach
Joe Schaefer. "He has gut. He has confidence in his ability and can come in and do exactly what he did late in the ballgame there for us. He is a huge, huge part of why we are winning as many games as we are because guys like Mickey are all coming in and doing an amazing job out of the pen. We only win that game because our pitching staff did what they were supposed to do today."
Kevin Lillicrop started the game for PLNU and went six innings allowing seven hits and no runs while striking out five.Â
Â
"Our pitching staff did a good job against a very good offensive team," Schaefer continued. "They are coming into their own and we are excited to see it."
Â
Brandon Van Stone was great in the start Hawaii Pacific. He went seven innings allowing eight hits and one run while striking out three. He gave way to Cody Ells (0-2) who took the loss after allowing a walk and three hits and the game-winning hit to Garcia in 1.2 innings pitched.
