CARSON, Calif. -
Mickey Dunleavy stepped up in a spot start as he gave the Point Loma baseball team five strong innings as they defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 4-2, for the Sea Lions' school-record 16th straight victory (Apr. 7).
Â
Dunleavy, who has worked exclusively out of the bullpen this season as the Sea Lions' setup guy, got the starting nod today and went five innings, allowing only four hits and no runs, while striking out three to improve to 4-0 on the season. He has not allowed a run in his last 11.2 innings pitched.
Â
"Mickey was outstanding today," said Point Loma head coach Joe Scahefer. "We were hoping to get 50-60 pitches out of him and for him to pitch into the sixth inning was a great job. He did a great job of keeping the ball down and keeping their hitters off-balance all game. He was excellent, and it was a great start."Â
The Sea Lions scored in the first, third and fifth innings to give Dunleavy a 4-0 lead. They scored runs on sacrifice flies by
Joseph Keller and
Devin Carter, and a Toros' error.
Anthony Torres had the only run scoring hit as he singled in Carter in the fifth to put the Sea Lions in front 4-0.
Â
"We love getting on the board first and playing with the lead," Schaefer said. "That is our goal every game. It was nice to get on the board early and extend the lead the rest of the day. We did a good job getting base runners and making productive outs today."
Â
Point Loma took a shutout into the eighth before Cal State Dominguez Hills scored two to cut the lead in half (4-2). The Toros were still threatening with two runners on and one out, but coach Schaefer went to
Coleman Huntley III who struck out the final two batters of the inning to get out of the jam.
Â
Huntley would work through a hit by pitch and an error in the ninth to hold CSUDH scoreless and earn his PacWest-leading 11th save of the season. That save matched the school record set by Jason Marabeas in 2004.
Â
PLNU was outhit in the game 9-5 but the Sea Lions received six base on balls compared to just one for the Toros.
Â
The Sea Lions will continue its season with another non-conference game on Wednesday, Apr. 8 when they host San Diego Christian at 3:00 p.m.
Â
"I don't think the win streak is that important or in anyone's head but it is just the fact that we are competing on a daily basis and we are in a position to win just about every week," Schaefer added. "We are getting good pitching early in the game and out of our bullpen, and we are playing great defense. We are feeling confident right now and that important heading into this final stretch of the season."Â
