WALNUT, Calif. - No. 6 seeded Point Loma could just never solve No. 1 seeded Cal Poly Pomona's pitcher Ryan Olson as the Broncos' starter held PLNU to just one hit over eight innings en route to a 12-0 victory for CPP in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional (May 15).
Â
This was a long anticipated game for the Sea Lions, who are in their first year as an active member in NCAA Division II. Â The game was originally schedule for Thursday evening but multiple rain delays pushed the PLNU-CPP game all the way until Friday morning.
Â
When the game finally started Cal Poly Pomona jumped on PLNU with two runs in the first inning to put the Sea Lions back on their heels. The Broncos drew a leadoff walk and had a hit by pitch to put two runners on for Nick Cooksey who singled up the middle, but on the play PLNU center fielder overran the ball allowing both runners to score and Cooksey to advance to third. CPP would go on to add single runs in the second and the sixth innings before breaking the game open with a six-run seventh.
Â
The pair of runs in the first would be more than enough for Olson in this contest. He went eight innings on just 95 pitches, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four. Sheppard had the Sea Lions' only hit off him with a single through the right side in the fourth.
Â
Sheppard (4-3) was the starter on the mound for PLNU. He allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings while striking out five.
Â
This was the fourth straight victory for Cal Poly Pomona (40-14), and eighth in its last nine contest. PLNU falls to 33-17 with the loss.
Â
Point Loma will now move into an elimination game against No. 5 seed UC San Diego at 1:30 p.m. Â
