Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sonoma State bests Sea Lions 1-0

SAN DIEGO - For the second straight Saturday the Point Loma women's soccer team is shaking their heads walking off the field with a tough 1-0 loss. This time it was Sonoma State that got the best of the Sea Lions with a goal in the 60th minute to win 1-0 (Sept. 12).

Win the result, Sonoma State improves to 2-1-1 and Point Loma drops to 2-2-0. PLNU has alternated between wins and losses all season.

Kristal Luna scored the only goal by corralling a loose ball following a corner kick and heading it into the goal for her first goal if the season.

It didn't help that PLNU never looked in sync offensively or defensively all match. The Sea Lions struggled to put together multiple quality touches in a row and when they find room offensively the Seawolves' goal keeper Ashley Luis always seemed to be there with the save (four total). Three times in the second half it looked like Point Loma would get the equalizer but each time Luis got a hand on the ball and kept PLNU off the board.

"Sonoma State played very well and they absolutely hammered us," said Point Loma head coach Tim Hall. "They were better than us in pretty much every facet of the game and they deserved the win."

Once Luna posted the matches' only goal, Sonoma State packed in the defense even more and the Sea Lions could not find the equalizer. Cori Deason, who had a team-leading five shots, had two good looks on goal that were both denied by the keeper and another that just sailed wide of the post.

"We did not play Point Loma soccer today," Hall added. "(Sonoma State) played good soccer and they beat us. We can't play like that and compete the way we need to. It was a disappointing performance for our women, and they would say the same thing."

Despite the tough loss coach Hall is still optimistic for his team moving forward.

"I am proud of this team and they have it in them (to do big things), they just have to decide when they want to bring it out," said Hall.

PLNU will host Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 4:30 p.m. to close out its non-conference schedule.
