Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Dixie State makes early goal hold up vs. PLNU

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Dixie State scored five minutes into the match and the Point Loma men's soccer team could never find the equalizer as it lost 1-0 its 2015 PacWest opener (Sept. 26).

The Red Storm (3-1-1, 1-0-1 PacWest) scored the lone goal of the match on a throw-in. The passer, Bryan Baugh, was able to find Jason Arollo in front of the net where he  was able to square up the pass and head-in the ball from six yards out for the score. After that Dixie State was content to play defense and the Sea Lions (1-3-1, 0-1-0 PacWest) could never break their ranks.

"The storyline today was 'could we break them down and score after they got the early lead? No.'" said Point Loma head coach Phil Wolf. "It is hard to get a goal when a team sits in and is content with a 1-0 lead. I was proud of the way our guys fought but was disappointed we spotted them a goal early. We got what we deserved."

Point Loma had five good looks on goal but all were thwarted by Dixie State's goal keeper Bradley Trella, who earned the shutout with five saves. Avrin Yakou had two saves in the losing effort for the Sea Lions.

"We didn't start right being down 1-0 early and the guys fought but they just couldn't get that goal back," Wolf said.

Point Loma will now return home to host Azusa Pacific in a match under the lights on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. This will be a historic occasion as it will mark the first time Point Loma has ever hosted a soccer match outdoors under the lights. The Sea Lions will be trying to pack the house and set the all-time attendance record at the match.

"We are excited for our first night match at Point Loma," said Wolf. "With this result we will have to be on our game and ready for Azusa Pacific on Thursday."
