ST. GEORGE, Utah - The shots finally found the back of the net today for the Point Loma women's soccer team as they defeated Dixie State 3-0 in its 2015 PacWest season opener (Sept. 26).
After dominating total shots and shots on goal in each of their first five matches (79-27), but having to settle for a 1-0 decision each time, PLNU (4-2-0, 1-0-0 PacWest) finally broke through with a season-high three goals to send Dixie State (2-4-0, 0-2-0 PacWest) to its fourth straight loss. Point Loma has now won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
Michaela Maes led the way offensively for the Sea Lions. She posted the first goal of the match just seconds before halftime on a deep shot from 25 yards out off an assist from
Keagan Bolibol, and then assisted on
Kaiti Freeberg's goal in the 70th minute which extended PLNU's lead to 2-0.
Jennifer Ballez tacked on a goal in the 82nd minute on an assist by
Easton Kawawaki for insurance. The goals were the first of the season for each Sea Lion student-athlete.
"Technically and tactically we did well and we worked hard in all facets of the game," said Point Loma head coach
Tim Hall. "All three goals we scored were in the flow of play and were great finishes. We worked the ball into areas for more high percentage shots today and gave ourselves great chances.
"Michaela played fantastic," Hall continued. "She is one of our best technical players and her shot right before the half was huge for us."
Ariel Oriarte and the defense posted their fourth shutout of the season in six matches. PLNU limited DSU to five shots and just two on goal.
"I am really proud of these women on a tough road trip," said Hall. "There are many distractions and this is a tough place to play, but the whole team had great energy even at the end of the game and the women worked hard all 90 minutes."
Point Loma will have a tough task next Thursday, Oct. 1 when it hosts No. 18 Azusa Pacific at 5:00 p.m. to match as part of #BeatAPU Week. The Sea Lions are 5-2-2 against Azusa Pacific since 2011, including 2-0-1 at PLNU.
