SAN DIEGO - The biggest win in the coach Wolf era occurred tonight as the Point Loma Sea Lions went into Cal State Dominguez Hills and shutout the former two-time national champions, 3-0 on their home field (Sept. 3).
Eduardo Gallardo got PLNU (1-0-0) on the board first with a goal in the 30th minute.
Nico Tagaloa, who was just moved to the forward position, then notched two goals in the second half to help Point Loma earn the impressive 3-0 road victory.
"Cal State Dominguez Hills has always been a daunting opponent," said coach Wolf. "They are one of the best teams in the West and NCAA each year, and have won two national championships. For our guys to open that way on the road was incredible."
PLNU was the aggressor from the beginning with three shots on goal (four shots overall) in just the first 12 minutes of the match. Gallardo finally broke the scoreless tie and was able to find the back of the net for Point Loma when
Manu Montal hit him for on a great run down the field and Gallardo was able to lob the ball over the keeper for the score.
Not satisfied with their one-goal lead, PLNU stayed offensively minded in the second half as it outshot the Toros 6-3 (13-7 overall). Tagaloa scored the first of his two goals with a header in the 68th minute off a corner kick from newcomer
Patrice Glaser. That combo would connect again for a score just five minutes later as Glaser stole the ball and crossed the ball to Tagaloa for a direct shot on goal.
"Nico was very deserving of both those goals," said coach Wolf. "He played great up top and both goals were justified. He earned those goals."
Coach Wolf was also ecstatic about the efforts of his defense and goal keeper which notched a shutout in a season opener for the first time in his four seasons as the head coach.
"The defense played great," said Wolf. "They were solid as a unit and did not get pulled apart.
Michael Lambert did a great job in his first start and really steadied that unit."
Lambert ended the game with three saves and his first career shutout.
Those would not be the only words of joy from coach Wolf who called this 'his biggest win (at Point Loma) times 10.'
"This win was a lot of work and a long time coming," he said. "I don't want to get ahead of ourselves with this win as this is just the season opener, but it was a great start. It is an accumulation of a lot of work and I want to thank my assistant coaches, both current and former ones."
Point Loma will now return to PLNU and host Cal Poly Pomona in its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 4:00 p.m.
