PLNU women hosts games Wednesday & Saturday

This week
The Point Loma women's basketball team will have a week exactly the opposite of its schedule from last week. The Sea Lions will host two PacWest games on Wednesday and Saturday, before going on the road for another game on Monday. PLNU will open the week against Concordia (CA) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., and will then face Holy Names on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Sea Lions will then travel to St. George, Utah to face Dixie State on Monday, Jan. 18 at 1:00 p.m. (PST)

Military Night Returns on Saturday, Jan. 30
PLNU Athletics will host its second Military Night of the year on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2:00 p.m. The Sea Lions will be honoring all former and active military members, and their admission to the game is free. The 500 fans in attendance also will received a free PLNU camo logo t-shirt which will be used as part of the in-game recognition. Westphal recognition night set for Feb. 3
Coach Bill Westphal has been at the helm of the PLNU women's basketball team for the past 17 years, and prior to the season he announced this would be his last year on the bench. Join us on Feb. 3 as PLNU Athletics pays tribute to coach Westphal with a ceremony prior to the game. The Sea Lions will take on Cal State San Bernardino in a non-conference game starting at 7:00 p.m. For more information contact Danny Barnts at dbarnts@pointloma.edu.
 
A look at the Sea Lions
The Point Loma women's basketball team went 2-1 last week to move their record to 9-5 on the season (3-4 PacWest). The Sea Lions are averaging 66.6 points per game and are shooting .416 percent from the field and .356 percent from 3-point range. PLNU has held its opponents to 62.5 ppg, a .387 shooting percentage and a .286 3-point shooting percentage.
 
Madison West has taken over the team-lead in scoring with 15.9 ppg. She has scored in double-figures in 12 of 14 games this year and is seventh in the PacWest in scoring. West also ranks third in the league in 3-point percentage (.423) and ninth in field goal percentage (.430). Alex Brunk is 14th in the PacWest in scoring (14.1), sixth in rebounding, 13th in assists (2.9) and second in steals (2.5). Roya Rustamzada (13.9 ppg) and Sydney Tonack (10.3 ppg) are also averaging in double-figures for PLNU.
 
A look at the Eagles
Concordia is 2-9 this season and 1-5 in the PacWest. The Eagles average 67.4 ppg and shoot .405 from the field. Brittany Stafford leads the team with 14.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. She is the only Eagle averaging double-figures. Zoe Goss averages 9.5 ppg as the second-leading scorer for CUI. This will be the second meeting of the year between PLNU and Concordia. Point Loma won the first contest 77-58 in Irvine on Dec. 12.
 
A look at the Hawks
Holy Names is 4-11 this season and 3-4 in the PacWest. They are still in search of their first road win of 2015-16 after opening the season with seven straight losses. However, the Hawks are coming off a victory in their last contest over BYU-Hawaii (52-43). As a team, HNU averages 53.6 point per game and are shooting .340 percent from the floor. Garysha Youngblood and Jeana Magana are tied for the team-lead in scoring with 9.2 ppg.
 
A look at the Red Storm
Dixie State is 2-10 this season and 2-4 in the PacWest. The Red Storm average 68.8 ppg and shoot .371 percent from the field and .257 percent from long range. Taylor Mann leads the team and ranks third in the PacWest with 18.8 ppg. She also leads the league with 10.6 rebounds per game, and is the only student-athlete averaging a double-double.  She is shooting .558 percent from the field and .797 percent at the charity stripe. This is the second meeting of the season between DSU and PLNU. Dixie State earned its first win of the season at Point Loma on Dec. 5, 79-69.  
 
Next week
The Sea Lions will have a light week as they play just one game next week. The Sea Lions will travel to Fresno Pacific to take on the Sunbirds on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
