Point Loma hosts pair of opponents this week

The Sea Lions hold Battle of the Dorms on Tuesday and Military Night on Saturday

This week
The Point Loma men's basketball team will host a pair of opponents this week. The Sea Lions will open their four-game homestand by welcoming in Bethesda for a non-conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 7:00 p.m. PLNU will then step back into PacWest play when it hosts BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4:00 p.m.

Battle of the Dorms on Jan. 26
The Point Loma Athletic Department will host the Battle of the Dorms on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Golden Gym. The Point Loma men's basketball team will take on Bethesda at 7:00 p.m. Show your school spirit with all your fellow hall mates by showing up at the game and getting loud. The dorm with the most school spirit will be crowned the winner at halftime and will win a Chick-fil-A party.

Military Night Returns on Saturday, Jan. 30
PLNU Athletics will host its second Military Night of the year on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2:00 p.m. The Sea Lions will be honoring all former and active military members, and their admission to the game is free. Fans in attendance also will received a free PLNU camo logo t-shirt which will be used as part of the in-game recognition.
 
A look at the Sea Lions
PLNU has won three straight games to improve to 10-7 on the season, and move into seventh in the PacWest standings (6-5). Last week, Point Loma earned its first-ever win at Dixie State before going on the road to defeat Fresno Pacific. This is the first time the Sea Lions have been over .500 in conference play since opening up PacWest play with an overtime win over Azusa Pacific.
 
Josh Rodriguez has taken over the team lead in scoring with 16.4 points per game. He ranks eighth in the PacWest. The freshman guard is also leading the PacWest and ranked sixth in the NCAA in assists with 7.0 per game. His .465 shooting percentage ranks 14th in the PacWest and his .864 mark at the free throw line is fifth in the league. Tanner Lancona is fourth in the PacWest in field goal percentage (.561) and third in 3-point percentage (.471). He is averaging 13.4 ppg and leads PLNU with 5.8 rebounds per contest. Sam Okhotin is second on the team with 15.6 ppg. He is shooting .497 percent from the field and .443 percent from 3-point range. Judd Welfringer (10.1 ppg) is also averaging double-figures for the Sea Lions.
 
As a team, Point Loma leads the conference and ranks 15th nationally with a .497 shooting percentage. The Sea Lions are also first in the league in 3-point percentage (.401) and 3-pointers per game (10.0). The Sea Lions are averaging 78.1 ppg and holding their opponents to 76.5 ppg.
 
Rodriguez runs PacWest Freshman of the Week honors to seven
Josh Rodriguez completed his second PacWest Freshman of the Week three-peat of the year and the point guard has now won seven of the 10 PacWest Freshman of the Week honors this season (Jan. 25). Rodriguez earned his third-straight weekly honor, averaging 22.0 points, 7.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game in two Point Loma wins. He had 13 points, six assists and four steals in PLNU's first-ever win at Dixie State. He scored a career-high 31 points and had nine assists in a win at Fresno Pacific. He scored 24 points in the second half, shooting 6-for-6 from the field and 9-for-9 at the free throw line, as the Sea Lions erased a six-point halftime deficit.
 
A look at the Flames
Bethesda is 4-15 this season and are coming off a win over Portland Bible (100-58). Geric Leath leads the team with 13.4 points per game. Mark Ware is also in double-figures for the Flames with 12.5 ppg. David Jelks is the team's leading rebounder with 5.6 boards per game. As a team, BUC averages 65.1 ppg and allows 79.7 ppg.
 
A look at the Seasiders
BYU-Hawaii is 10-6 on the season and 7-4 in the PacWest. They have lost three of their last four games. The Seasiders are is led by Scott Friel and Ian Harward who are each averaging 17.0 ppg and at least 8.0 rebounds. Justin Yamzon is pacing the PacWest with a .909 shooting percentage from the free throw line. Harward is also leading the league in field goal percentage (.623) and is second in blocks (23).
 
Next week
The Sea Lions will host just one game when Hawaii Pacific comes to town on Saturday, Feb. 6 for a 4:00 p.m. tip off.
