Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Seasiders snap Sea Lions' winning streak

SAN DIEGO - Four Sea Lions scored in double-figures but it was not enough for the Point Loma men's basketball team to overcome a dominant performance on the glass by BYU-Hawaii as PLNU fell at home to the Seasiders, 87-71, on Saturday, Jan. 30.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for Point Loma. PLNU is now 11-8 on the season and in eighth place in the PacWest standings with a record of 6-6. BYU-Hawaii sits fifth in the PacWest standings with a conference record of 9-4 (12-6 overall).

PLNU fell behind early as BYU-Hawaii went on an 11-3 run to open the game, and never led after going up 3-2. The Seasiders led 47-37 at the half. The Sea Lions scored the first four points of the second half to cut the lead to six (47-41) but this is as close as they would get the rest of the way.

"BYU-Hawaii was very good tonight," said Point Loma head coach Bill Carr. "They are very physical and well coached. They play with a lot of concentration, and they took it to us tonight."

Josh Rodriguez led Point Loma with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He added four rebounds and five assists. Tanner Lancona had 14 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Chad Watkins and Mike Planeta chipped in with 11 points apiece.

The Sea Lions struggled on the glass where the Seasiders outrebounded them 43-25. BYU-Hawaii had 18 offensive rebounds which helped them outscore PLNU 23-10 on second chance points.

"We need to be more physical, be in better positions defensively, have more awareness and finish the possession with a block out," said Carr.

Scott Friel paced the Seasiders with 20 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Cory Lange also posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

"In order to be in top six and play in the PacWest Conference tournament, you have to win games, and you have to win games at home," Carr explained. "We have to continue to get better, prepare better and execute better."

The Sea Lions will have a chance to work on that execution this week as they don't play another game until next Saturday, Feb. 6 when it hosts Hawaii Pacific at 4:00 p.m.
