SAN DIEGO -
Madison West's 19 points led four Sea Lions in double-figures and the Point Loma women's basketball team never trailed in its 74-55 victory over Hawaii Hilo on Saturday, Jan. 9.
The Sea Lions are now 9-5 on the season and 3-4 in the PacWest. The Vulcans fell to 2-8 (2-3 PacWest) with the loss.
West was 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc to end the game with 19 points and seven rebounds. She lead a complete team effort for PLNU in which eight student-athletes scored.
Alex Brunk posted her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She added a team-leading four assists and four steals. PLNU also got 10 points from
Amy Ogren and 11 from
Roya Rustamzada.
"We can't win with just two women scoring," explained Point Loma head coach
Bill Westphal. "We have to have three scoring, and it is better if we can have four contribute on a given night. A couple more joined the party tonight and that is a good thing."
The Sea Lions shot 49 percent in the game and held Hawaii Hilo to a 36 percent clip. Kim Schmelz was the only Vulcan in double-figures with 12 points. PLNU also dominated inside, outrebounding UHH 45-20 and outscoring them inside the paint 28-12.
Point Loma opened the game on a 10-2 run and led 25-11 at the end of the first quarter. They would never allow their lead to get below 10 points. UHH cut it to 58-48 with a jumper at the end of the third quarter, but PLNU had the answer in the fourth quarter. They open the quarter on a 14-2 run to halt any thought of a Vulcans' comeback and went on to the 74-55 victory.
"(To start the fourth quarter) we made an adjustment defensively to take away some of their easy looks, and some moves offensively to get to the basket better," Westphal added. "Both those really worked well for us."
Coach Westphal was happy with the win but not entirely satisfied with the performance.
"We have been struggling on both ends," said Westphal. "Tonight we played about 25 good minutes, so we will try to get that to 30 next game.
"We should start to play better now that we are home and can get a little more rest," Westphal added.
Point Loma next game will be on Wednesday, Jan. 13 with its Welcome Back Game against Concordia (CA). The contest will tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
