SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's soccer team took a heartbreaking 2-1 loss on Saturday, Oct. 1, against Dominican (CA).
After giving up a goal in the second minute of the match, Point Loma (2-4-3, 1-3-0 PacWest) was able to find the equalizer off the foot of
Indiana Fuller to tie the match in the 24th minute.
Keyran Kelly had the assist as he put a low, rolling pass across the mouth of the goal and Fuller connected with it for the score on the far side of the net.
That goal capped off an offensive assault for the Sea Lions in which they had nine shots, five shots on goal and five corner kicks in the first half. The two teams went into the locker room at the half tied at 1-1.
In the second half, PLNU kept on the attack, again outstating the Penguins (2-7-0, 2-2-0 PacWest), but they were unable to get the go-ahead goal. Dominican hung in the match long enough and then got their opportunity with a counter attack in the 69th minute. The Penguins pushed forward and got a great pass to get Luke Raley for a 1v1 with the keeper. However, as he lined up the shot he saw his teammate Alex Herrera sprint wide open in front of the goal, and Raley laid the ball off to Herrera for the easy score.
"A lot of what we did was really bright but you see, especially in the second half, when there is a team that doesn't have any interest in playing it is basically like they are killing a power play in hockey," said Point Loma head coach
Phil Wolf, "but if you concede goals you encourage that to happen.
"It is hard for the defenders because on this team we have had trouble scoring goals," continued Wolf, "so they can't put a foot wrong because if they put a foot wrong they might concede a goal and just encourage the opponent to go deeper and deeper (with their defense), and you saw that today.
Christian Lathrop ended the game with five saves for DUC, and they also had two team saves.
Dylan Roberts made one save during his second start in net for the Sea Lions.
PLNU will continue its seven-match homestand on Thursday, Oct. 6 against Academy of Art. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
