SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's soccer team made
Chris Reingen's 29th-minute goal hold up for a 1-0 shutout victory over Holy Names on Thursday, Oct. 13.
The win brings the Sea Lions' record to 4-5-3 and to 3-4-0 in the PacWest. Holy Names drops to 1-9-0 and 1-6-0 in the PacWest.
Point Loma finally began the match with the energy coach
Phil Wolf is always looking for but it was not until the 29th minute when they would take the lead despite outshooting the Hawks in the opening period. PLNU scored what would be the game-winning goal courtesy of a deft flick by midfielder
Jorge Navarro, which paved the way for the senior Reingen's first career goal. Operating in an advanced midfield role, Reingen found space on the right hand side of the box before slotting home an emphatic opening score. This was just the Sea Lions' second first-half goal of the season.
"The last three matches we conceded a goal early and lost all three, so to get a goal, even in the 30th minute, was huge," said Point Loma head coach
Phil Wolf.
With the lead the Sea Lions were able to turn to their stalwart defense, which posted its sixth shutout in 12 matches. PLNU used a variety of student-athletes during the 90 minutes to limit HNU to just two shots on goal, both of which were saved by
Dylan Roberts.
"There are some guys that deserve to play more and with two games in one weekend you have to rotate the guys," explained Wolf. "I haven't done it recently and we have been tired in the second game, so this gives us the best chance on Saturday."
The Sea Lions will be welcoming in preseason PacWest favorites Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 15 for its final home match of 2016. It will also be Senior Day presented by Northwestern Mutual for eight Point Loma seniors.
"I would love these seniors to finish well," said Wolf. "For whatever reason it hasn't clicked with this group, but we have a very good team coming in for our last home game, so I would like to see a great performance by them so they can walk away proud on the day that they played well."
