The four-goal advantage matched the Sea Lions' largest margin of victory in a PacWest contest in the past two seasons. It also allowed PLNU (7-2-3) to stay tied atop the PacWest standings with Azusa Pacific at 5-1-1. The loss dropped Holy Names to 1-9-1 (1-6-0).
Â
Those goals by Pedlowe and Freeberg were the result of continual offensive pressure from the Sea Lions, which had 29 shots, including 13 on goal in the contest. However, it was not until the 42nd minute that Point Loma finally broke through, and it was all helped by a set piece. Pearce took a long free kick, from the left side of the field just past midfield that sailed right over the scrum of student-athletes on the front side of the net to an open Freeberg on the far side. She collected the ball out of the air and deposited it into the net for her first goal of the season.
Â
Within a blink of an eye she would add her second to give PLNU the 2-0 lead at the half. HNU took the ball after the score and lost it going forward on an attack. The Sea Lions pushed forward and Pearce served a great pass over the defense to Freeberg who sprinted past everyone for another goal just 46 seconds later.
Â
The score remained at 2-0 until another set piece score and another quick strike sealed the match. Pedlowe's first career goal could not have been drawn up nicer as Ballez served up a perfect corner kick and Pedlowe sailed above the defenders for the header into the net in the 67th minute. Less than three minutes later it was Ballez making a perfect pass to Pedlowe who was open in the box for another score.
Â
"We have focused on the offense in practice and we are getting productivity from a lot of different which I really like," said Point Loma head coach Tim Hill. "When you score it gives you more energy and more of a desire (to want to score) and now they believe they can.
Â
"Kaiti is starting to hit her stride on the attack and she is starting to put points on the board for us which is big," Hall continued. "Emily has been playing well all year and has been playing well, but to finally get some fruit for her after all that hard work is very good. All that can do is encourage these girls they can do it again."
Â
As good as the offense was the defense for the Sea Lions might have been even better. PLNU allowed just one shot to the Hawks in the match as it extended its shutout streak to five matches and 518 consecutive minutes. This is the third straight season the Sea Lions have had a shutout streak of at least 500 minutes.
Â
"For us a win is the most important thing, but a win with a shutout is what we are really trying to do," Hall explained. "We have created a culture here where we hate giving up goals."
Â
That Point Loma defense will be tested on Saturday (Oct. 15) by a tough Fresno Pacific team (5-4-1, 3-2-1 PacWest). Saturday will also be Senior Day, presented by Northwestern Mutual, for four PLNU seniors. The match will start at 2 p.m.
Â
"We have a big test against Fresno Pacific on Saturday, and our game is going to have to step up to get that result."Â
