Middles power PLNU to victory over Argonauts

SAN DIEGO - The Sea Lions proved it is all about hitting percentage. Tonight Point Loma won all three sets in which they outhit Notre Dame de Namur, and dropped the only one it did not, in a 3-1 victory over the Argonauts on Saturday, Oct. 8.

PLNU improved to 4-3 in the PacWest (6-10 overall) and moved into sixth in the standings. The loss drops NDNU to 2-7 in conference (4-13 overall).

Samantha Krakower was the offensive standout on the evening for the Sea Lions. She had 17 kills and just two errors in 32 chances for a .469 hitting percentage.  The 17 kills matched a career-high for the junior. Marissa Hageman also had a very efficient match, hitting .375 with 12 kills and just three errors.

"We have sneaky middles who know how to get it done and a setter that knows how to get them the ball they need," said Point Loma head coach Jonathan Scott. "This was a match that we passed well and dug very well to give them good opportunities."

Brianna Sizemore added a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Cara Keturakis added 43 assists in the four sets, and Christin Fisher had a match-best 25 digs.

Point Loma outhit the Argonauts .197 to .045. It was the lowest hitting percentage for an opponent against the Sea Lions all season. The blocking also favored PLNU 12-4 to add to the hitting foes for NDNU.

"In our sport when you make an error it is automatic point for the other team, which is not the case in many other sports" explained Scott. "That happens every time you make a mistake in our sport so it can really weigh on an individual's confidence if she makes a couple of mistakes in a row, and that is how you lose momentum."

The Sea Lions have been keeping that momentum at Golden Gym, winning three straight at home and four of their last five.

"We definitely play with more confidence at home, unfortunately," Scott explained. "We rely on our entire team to contribute, including the injured student-athletes, and since they don't go on the road they invest heavily in that energy when we are here."

PLNU will have the opportunity to play its next match at home as it welcomes in Holy Names on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
