ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Point Loma volleyball team dropped its regular season finale to Dixie State 25-21, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-20 on Saturday, Nov. 19.
However, the result was only part of the story for two teams with no playoff hopes. PLNU (11-18, 9-11 PacWest) was eagerly watching the digs for
Christin Fisher, who entered the match needing 35 to break the school's single-season record. Fisher, who already owns the single-match and career dig records, was looking really good after PLNU won the second set and she sat with 16 digs. Point Loma's head coach
Jonathan Scott basically knew it would need to go five sets for Fisher to have a good chance at the record, but the match ended in four and she finished her season with 674 digs, six short of the record.
Even with the defense of Fisher, Point Loma could not slow down the Trailblazers offense enough. They hit at least .211 in every set they won and three student-athletes posted double-figures in kills, including Delayne Daniel with a match-best 17.
Brianna Sizemore led Point Loma with 15 kills. She added another double-double with 10 digs.
Marissa Hageman recorded her third career double-double, and second in her last four contests, with 14 kills and 12 digs. She also led Point Loma with four blocks.
Cara Keturakis closed out her freshman campaign with 39 assists and five kills.
PLNU finishes the 2016 season tied with Fresno Pacific for eighth in the PacWest standings with a 9-11 record (11-18 overall).
