Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Viettry dishes out 12 assists in road win at CUI

IRVINE, Calif. - The Point Loma women's basketball team shot 57 percent from the field, Alex Brunk posted her first double-double of the season and Anna Viettry dished out a career-high 12 assists to lead the Sea Lions to a 79-66 road win at Concordia (CA) on Saturday, Dec. 10.

PLNU has now won back-to-back PacWest games since dropping its conference opener. The Sea Lions are 7-2 on the season and tied for fourth in the PacWest standings at 2-1. The loss drops the Eagles to 5-4 on the season and evens their PacWest record at 2-2.

Brunk was highly efficient in posting her team-high 16 points. She went 6-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range. She helped set the tone early as PLNU hit six of its first nine shots from long range to build a first-half lead which it would never relinquish. The junior forward also added 10 rebounds and five assists.

Viettry's 12 assists are the most in a game for any PacWest student-athlete this year and the most by a Sea Lion since Savannah Erskine in 2014. The whole team followed her lead and assisted on 27 of their 34 baskets. She added seven points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting. Kassidy Gengenbacher started for the first time this season, but it did not affect her streak of double-figure scoring games, which improved to eight with her 14-point effort tonight. Madison West hit three 3-pointers to match the school's career record of 198, which is currently held by Christy Stevens. Sydney Tonack and Roya Rustamzada chipped in with 11 and 12 points, respectively.

Concordia's Sopavy Seng led all scorers with 21 points. She came off the bench to hit 7-of-17 shots and 6-of-8 free throws. Montana Walters also reached double-figures with 14 points.

Point Loma used a 19-6 run from the end of the first quarter until the middle of the second to take control of the game. It turned a one-point deficit (13-12) into a 12-point lead (31-19), and it would never let the Eagles get closer than the four-point halftime score of 35-31. The Sea Lions would seal the game on an 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter which pushed their lead to 17 (62-45).

The Sea Lions also had a big advantage on the glass where it outrebounded the Eagles 38-25. PLNU used its size inside to outscore CUI 46-24 on points in the paint.

The Sea Lions will return home to host Antelope Valley in an exhibition game on Wednesday, Dec. 14 before stepping back into PacWest play when it hosts Holy Names on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.
