Bats break out for 11 runs in win over ENMU

SAN DIEGO - Ryan Garcia had five hits and Harrison Ramey went 4-for-4 as the Sea Lions' bats busted out in the series opener to defeat Eastern New Mexico, 11-6 (Feb. 18).

This was the fifth straight win for PLNU (5-3) and just the second loss of the season for ENMU (5-2).

The Sea Lions scored in five of their eight innings, including scoring in each of the last four innings and putting up three-spots in the second, sixth and eighth. PLNU had 16 hits and drew nine to keep the Greyhounds' pitchers in the stretch nearly all game.

"We've been saying all along that we are a much better offensive team, we just hadn't shown it yet," said PLNU head coach Joe Schaefer. "We had been waiting to get things going the way we know we are capable of, and today was the first glimpse what I think we can be offensively.

"Our goal is to score in every inning and have constant pressure on the other team," Schaefer explained. "Some of it was given to us by a few walks, but our guys did a good job keeping the pressure on."

Garcia was 5-for-6 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. All four of Ramey's hits were singles and he added a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. Matt Jervis, making his first start of the season, drove in three runs and scored another as he went 3-for-5 with a double. Devin Carter also added a two-run homer.

"Ryan hadn't had one of these days yet. He had big hits last week but he hadn't had 'one of those days yet' and to get him hot the first game of this series is big," said Schaefer. "Hopefully he can keep it going.

"Harrison has been doing it the past few weeks," Schaefer continued. "He scraps, fights and competes. He had an excellent day and it was much needed."

PLNU starting pitcher Eric Pierce (2-0) earned the victory by allowing six hits and four runs in six innings. He walked two and struck out three. Nathan Bennett earned his second save of the season after working out of a jam in the eighth inning. He struck out two over his 1.1 innings of work.

"We weren't real sharp on the mound like we were the last two weeks, but luckily the offense picked a good day to break out," added Schaefer.

The 11 runs for PLNU matched the most they had scored in a home game since the 2011 season. Nine different Sea Lions scored in the game, and seven of the nine starters had a hit.

PLNU and ENMU will continue their series with another single nine-inning game on Friday, Feb. 19 at 2:00 p.m.
