Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Four Sea Lions double-figures but CBU prevails

SAN DIEGO - Once again the Point Loma men's basketball team had four student-athletes reach double-figures in scoring but tonight the high powered offense of California Baptist that prevailed as PLNU fell to the Lancers, 89-71, on Senior Night (Feb. 13).

PLNU (13-11, 8-9 PacWest) now drops into a four-way tie for seventh place in the PacWest standings along with Chaminade, Fresno Pacific and Dominican. The win keeps CBU (21-6, 12-5 PacWest) in a tie for third place in the standings.

Josh Rodriguez paced PLNU with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Jack Langborg and Chad Watkins each chipped in with 14, and Zach Burnham had 11 points and a team-leading four assists. Point Loma shot 51 percent in the game, but it was not enough to overcome California Baptist nearly doubling up PLNU on the glass (37-19).

The Lancers ended up outscoring the Sea Lions 16-2 in second chance points and 52-31 on points in the paint. Michael Smith went 11-of-14 from the field to lead all scorers with 29 points. He was a perfect 6-of-6 on his 3-point shots, and he also grabbed seven rebounds. Kalidou Diouf just missed a double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Giusti added 10 assists as CBU had helpers on 27 of its 38 baskets.

Prior to the game Point Loma said goodbye to four seniors. Judd Welfringer and Sam Okhotin have both been with the program the past four years, while Aaron Roedl and Randall Jackson have been two-year members of the team. Members of this group helped lead PLNU to the 2013-14 NCCAA National Championship and the school's first back-to-back 20 win seasons in 25 years.

"Those four guys helped build the foundation of our program and they all will be missed," said PLNU head coach Bill Carr.

The Sea Lions will now head on the road for three PacWest contests in Hawaii to close out their regular season. PLNU will open the trip against Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 9:30 p.m. (PST).
