Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Point Loma falls to #4 CBU on Senior Night

SAN DIEGO - Sydney Tonack scored a career-high 21 points, and Alex Brunk added a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, but No. 4 California Baptist proved to be too much for the Point Loma women's basketball team in the second half as the Sea Lions fell to the Lancers, 88-70 (Feb. 19).

This was the third straight loss for Point Loma (17-8, 10-6 PacWest) after having its nine-game winning streak snapped last Saturday. Coach Bill Westphal's win total remains at 595 in his career. The victory allowed CBU (24-1, 16-1 PacWest) to stay in a three-way tie for first place in the PacWest standings with Azusa Pacific and Academy of Art.

PLNU played with just six student-athletes, and all were in the scoring column. Tonack hit 7-of-11 shots, including a career-best three 3-pointers. She also added two blocks and four rebounds. Brunk helped the Sea Lions stay in the rebounding battle with CBU as she pulled down double-digit rebounds for the second straight game. She now has a team-leading nine double-doubles. She added her seventh game with 20 or more points as she hit 8-of-15 shots from the field. Madison West reached double-figures with 13 points.

"Those were great games by Sydney (Tonack) and (Alex) Brunk," said PLNU head coach Bill Westphal, who was coaching in his final game at Golden Gymnasium. "They are both getting to be really good players."

Point Loma made an 8-0 run at the end of the half to take a 37-35 lead into the locker room and were still up in the middle of the third quarter, but then CBU found its stroke. The Lancers went 11-of-17 from 3-point range in the second half to outscore PLNU by 20 points (53-33).

"We played well for 20 minutes but then they started hitting 3's like they were going out of style," said Bill Westphal. "We got tired and couldn't stop the avalanche.

"A couple of our starters didn't have their best games and we can't beat that team without four of our players having good games," he added. "CBU is a fine team."

Cassidy Milhalko led five Lancers in double-figures with 25 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 9-of-12 from the field and 6-of-9 from behind the arc, including hitting five 3's in the second half. Courtney Nelson also added 18 points.

Prior to the game, PLNU said goodbye to its lone senior, Jordan Ligons, who was a four-year member of the team and a captain this season.

"Jordan had a tough senior year but she was our leader all year," said Westphal. "She is probably the most popular person on the team, and just a wonderful lady."

The Sea Lions will go on the road to Hawaii to close out the 2015-16 regular season. PLNU will open the trip with a key game against Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. (PST).
