CHICO, Calif. -
Devin Carter was 3-for-4 for the Sea Lions, but he was the lone offensive standout in a season opening loss for the Point Loma baseball team at Chico State, 4-0.
Â
Carter had half of PLNU's (0-1) hits in the game. He was retired his first at-bat but then reached base safely via a single in his next three plate appearances.
Mike Gordner,
Tanner Handa and
Joseph Keller had the other base knocks for Point Loma.
Â
Chico State (4-0) had four pitchers combine on the shutout. Clayton Gelfand started the game and went six innings allowing five hits and a walk, while striking out four. Three relievers then combined to go an inning apiece and allow only one hit.
Â
The Wildcats scored one in the first inning, and one in the third on a throwing error. They tacked on two more in the fourth aided by another Sea Lions' throwing error. After the fourth PLNU allowed just one Wildcat runner to reach base.
Â
"We just need to settle in," said Point Loma head coach
Joe Schaefer. "We weren't ready early and it showed. We fouled off some good pitches which we normally hit and made some errors early. Things got better as the game went along. We just need to show up tomorrow and be ready to compete."
Â
Point Loma starter
Kellen Sheppard went six innings with eight hits allowed and four runs (two earned). He struck out one and walked no one.
Â
Jerrett Maas and Tony Roque were each 2-for-3 to pace Chico State.
Â
These teams will conclude their series on Saturday, Feb. 6 with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.Â
