Game Recap: Baseball |

Win streak goes to 12 before dropping nightcap

HONOLULU - The Point Loma baseball team won the opening game of Monday's doubleheader at Hawaii Pacific, 5-2, behind a great start from Kellen Sheppard, to run its winning streak to 12 games. But that winning streak was quickly snapped as the Sea Lions lost game two, 10-4 (Mar. 7).

This was the beginning of an eight-game road trip to open PacWest play for PLNU. The Sea Lions are now 12-4 on the season and 1-1 in the PacWest. The split moves the Sharks to 12-4 as well (4-2 PacWest).

Game 1
Kellen Sheppard (4-1) pitched seven scoreless innings allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out four, and he also knocked in a run and scored another to help lead Point Loma to a 5-2 victory in the opener for its 12th straight win.

All five of the Sea Lions' runs were either manufactured with a sacrifice or came on a two-out hit. PLNU hitters had great approaches against Sharks' starter Rico Garcia (3-1) all night en route to handing the preseason All-PacWest pitcher his first loss of the season. Garcia was charged with six hits, three walks and three runs, while walking no one and throwing two wild pitches.

Every starter in the lineup for Point Loma reached base. Ryan Garcia had a pair of singles and was the only Sea Lion to record a multi-hit game. Devin Carter legged out his third triple of the season, and he added an RBI and a run scored. Joseph Keller and Harrison Ramey also had runs batted in.

HPU had just four hits in the game and Nolan Barraza posted two of them (2-for-4). Both runs the Sea Lions allowed were unearned.

Game 2
The unearned run theme continued in the second game of the doubleheader. The Sharks took advantage of a pair of PLNU miscues to score four unearned runs and go on to the 10-4 victory.

A Point Loma error led to a pair of runs for HPU in the first inning and the other aided in the two-out, four-run rally in the fifth. Five different Sharks had a pair of RBIs. Designated hitter Steven Camberos was a homer short of the cycle.

Devin Carter tried to help lead a late Point Loma comeback. He homered early in the ninth inning as the Sea Lions scored three times and had the bases loaded when the game ended. Carter finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Kolby Kaneshiro reached base in all five of his plate appearances. He drew four walks, was hit by a pitch and scored two runs. Harrison Ramey also reached base all five times, with four coming via the walk. HPU pitchers walked 11 Sea Lions in the game, but PLNU left 15 on base compared to just six for the Sharks.

Trevor Abshire (1-1) pitched better than his line indicates. However, both times the leadoff man reached against Abshire he scored and it led to a big inning for the Sharks. Abshire finished the game with 4.2 innings, eight hits, seven runs (three earned), one walk and five strikeouts.

Ethan Kalin earned the win for Hawaii Pacific. He went 5.3 innings allowing three hits and eight walks, but just the one earned run. Tyler Stone also pitched 2.2 innings scoreless ball out of the pen.
