AZUSA, Calif. - The Point Loma baseball team split a PacWest doubleheader with Azusa Pacific on Friday, Apr. 1. PLNU hit four home runs to win the opener 9-4. APU took the second game 12-4.
The Sea Lions are now 17-9 on the season and 6-6 in the PacWest. APU moved to 16-15 and 12-6 in the PacWest.
Game 1The Sea Lions hit a season-high four home runs, two by
Devin Carter, to win the opener 9-4. Carter powered Point Loma to the victory by going 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Ryan Garcia also scored three runs while going 2-for-5 with a home run.
Kellen Sheppard had another solid outing on the mound. He went six innings allowing eight hits and three runs to improve to 5-2 on the season. He did not walk or strike out a batter. He remains second in the PacWest with a 1.72 ERA, and he continues to lead the league with a .979 WHIP.
The game was tied at 2-2, on solo homers from Carter and Garcia, entering the sixth inning when the Sea Lions' bats broke out for four runs. Carter and
Colby Kaneshiro each drove in runs, and then
Joseph Keller capped off the inning with a two-run homer, his third of the season.
Point Loma added three insurance runs in the seventh on a three-run shot by Carter and Sheppard would hand the ball over to the bullpen. Huggins pitched the seventh and
John Shurance went the final two innings to lock down the win. Huggins' ERA now stands at 0.96 this season, while Shurance's is only slightly better at 0.84.
Harrison Ramey and Kaneshiro each recorded a multi-hit game for the Sea Lions which outhit the Cougars 13-10. Michael Goudreau had two hits including a home run and two runs scored to lead APU. Jonny Reid (1-4) took the loss after being charged with 10 hits and six runs in six innings pitched.
Game 2The Cougars scored nine runs in the first three innings and went on to win 12-4 to spoil
Ryan Garcia's 4-for-4 performance at the plate.
After putting up one run in the first, APU got three runs in the second and broke the game open with a five-run third. Adrian Tovalin and Pablo O'Connor each drove in three runs for Azusa Pacific.
All four of Garcia's hits were singles as he raised his batting average to .366.
Michael Randel hit his first career home run late in the game.
Harrison Ramey recorded his second straight multi-hit game.
Joe Huthsing earned the victory for APU. He went seven innings allowing nine hits and just two unearned runs while striking out nine and walking three.
