SAN DIEGO - Point Loma and Academy of Art opened their four-game PacWest series by splitting Friday's doubleheader. ARTU won the opener, 10-3, behind a solid performance on the mound by Brett Bovee. PLNU came back to win the late game, 5-1, as
Nathan Bennett delivered eight innings of one-run baseball.
Â
Point Loma is now 21-13 on the season and 10-10 in the PacWest. Academy of Art is 10-25 and 5-16 in the PacWest.
Â
Game 1
Brett Bovee went seven innings allowing just five hits and three runs (all earned) while walking five and striking out four to lead the Urban Knights to a 10-3 win in the opener.
Â
His team staked Bovee to a 7-0 lead as they scored two runs in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth. Three Urban Knights drove in two RBI, including Tyler Strawn who was 2-for-5 with a home run.
Â
Joseph Keller knocked in all three runs for Point Loma. The Sea Lions loaded the bases with no out in the fourth inning, but got only one run when Keller grounded out to shortstop to plate
Devin Carter. He would add two more RBIs a two-out, two-run double in the sixth. He finished 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. Carter and
Mike Gordner each recorded a multi-hit game for PLNU, but the Sea Lions were outhit 12-5.
Â
"We hit balls hard in game 1 but the approach was just not fitting for who we are and what we need in this ballpark," said Point Loma head coach
Joe Schaefer. "We hit ball is into the winds and it was frustrating because we know better than that."
Â
Game 2
Making just his third start of the season,
Nathan Bennett allowed just two hits and one walk over eight innings to snap the Sea Lions' three-game skid. He walked three and struck out five in Point Loma's 5-1 win.
Â
Bennett (2-0) allowed a fourth inning run to ARTU on a sacrifice fly after the Urban Knights had bunted him to third following a leadoff double. After that he set down 10 of the next 12 batters, with the only exceptions being two walks.
Â
"Bennett he does a very good job battling and making mid-game adjustments," said coach Schaefer. "He is a command guys and he uses that sink to locate the ball down to both sides of plate. It was nice to see him work that deep into the game. This was a very encouraging outing and it was big-time when we needed it." Â
Â
Point Loma's bats finally got going in the second half of the game.
Joseph Keller was again the offensive spark as he and
Matt Jervis each singled with one out. Keller took third on Jervis' hit and then scored the first run of the game on an attempted sacrifice bunt by
Tanner Handa that was so perfectly placed it turned into an RBI-single. Point Loma would tack on two more in the both the seventh and eighth.
Â
"Our intent changed in game 2 and even though we went down early the approach was much better," said Schaefer. "We didn't get rewarded early but we got some balls to fall and some base runners later in the game."
Â
Every Sea Lion that stepped into the batter's box had a hit.
Joseph Keller again led the way by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Matt Jervis also had a pair of singles to post the Sea Lions' other multi-hit performance.
