Sea Lions complete series sweep of Holy Names

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma baseball team completed the series sweep over PacWest Conference foe Holy Names with a 20-2 win in the opener and a 2-1 victory in the nightcap (Apr. 30).

The Sea Lions are 28-16 on the season and have moved into fourth place in the PacWest standings with a 17-13 conference mark.  The losses drop Holy Names to 10-36 on the season and t0 7-25 in the PacWest.

Game 1
Point Loma matched a season-high with 20 runs en route to winning the opener 20-2.

Kellen Sheppard led the offense by going 4-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored. The Sea Lions also received two-RBI games from AJ Derr, Ryan Garcia, Cale Hathaway, Mike Gordner and Colby Kaneshiro. Gordner added three hits, and Harrison Ramey scored three runs and had three hits. Carter also crossed the plate three times and Kaneshiro hit his first career home run.

Trevor Abshire (4-3) earned the victory by throwing five innings of five-hit baseball. He allowed two runs and two walks while striking out five. The bullpen closed out the game with scoreless frames from Noah Huggins, Patrick McMullen, Ryan Casper and Garrett Gooding. The Sea Lions bullpen allowed just one run over 12 innings in the series.

Holy Names scored two runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2 and then the Sea Lions' bats woke up. Point Loma scored five in the bottom of the inning, and then added on with three runs in the fourth and nine in the sixth. The Sea Lions sent 14 men to the plate in the sixth inning and AJ Derr provided the big hit with a bases loaded double.

"It was a good day and we did a lot of things right that first game," said Point Loma head coach Joe Schaefer. "We had good at-bats, did well on the mound and played really good defense.

"(Good defense) was really the theme of the weekend," Schaefer continued. "It probably goes unrecognized but we were able to put together four really good defensive games this weekend makes a big difference in the series."

Holy Names' Chris Gnos had a two-run homer in the third inning to provide all the offense for the Hawks in the contest. He finished 2-for-4 with that home run, two RBI and a run scored. Jared Carr (2-7) took the loss after being charged with four hits, four walks and six runs over 2.1 innings pitched.

Game 2
After winning comfortably in the first three games of the series the Sea Lions found themselves locked in a tightly contested game with Holy Names in the series finale, but PLNU found ways to push across two late runs to earn the victory 2-1 and complete the series sweep.

Point Loma faced its first deficit against HNU since the first inning of the series after the Hawks pushed a runner across in the top of the 5th on a two-out single by Dusty Zeisler. The Sea Lions answered Holy Names' run in the bottom of the inning on a double by Tanner Handa in the eighth pitch of the at-bat to score Mike Gordner and tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom the sixth Point Loma rallied for the go-ahead run. After Ryan Garcia led off the inning with a double into the right field corner, Devin Carter put down a bunt to the third baseman which he was able to beat out on a close throw as he and the first baseman made contact on the play. Garcia read the bunt and when the throw went to first and there was contact he did not hesitate and sprinted home underneath the tag for the eventual game-winning run.

"Carter laid down a couple of really good bunt in that game," said Schaefer. "They made a really good play on the first one and then in a sacrifice situation in the last one he lays down a really good bunt and busts his hump down the line to force a bad throw which was the difference maker. That type of execution is what you need to win tight conference games."

Holy Names did not go away easy. They put the first two runners on in the seventh inning in this shortened contest but John Shurance came out of the pen to get three outs and strand both runners. It was Shurance's third save of the season. Coleman Huntley III (1-2) earned the win in relief of Kevin Lillicrop. The starter Lillicrop pitched five innings allowing three hits and one run, while walking three and striking out seven.

"Lillicrop battled and kept us in the game and Huntley and Shurance did a good job and luckily we were able to get a couple big swings late in the game to get just enough," added Schaefer.

The three pitchers for the Sea Lions were matched by Holy Names starter Jayce Bannister (3=7). The lefty pitched all six innings, allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out two.

"(Bannister) did a very good job in the game," Schaefer said. "We didn't make adjustments well and he kept us off-balance and he didn't put anyone on base. He made us earn everything."
