Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Wildcats best the Sea Lions at D2 Showcase

LA JOLLA - The Point Loma volleyball team dropped its first match at the D2 West Region Showcase to Central Washington 25-16, 26-24 and 25-23.

PLNU is now 1-4 on the season, while CWU (1-4) gets in the win column for the first time this year.

The sweep does not tell the whole story as the Sea Lions were leading late in both sets 2 and 3. However, each time Central Washington was able to make a late run to come back and take the set.

Ashlynn Fresques recorded her first career double-double in the loss for PLNU. She posted a career-high 14 kills and 11 digs. She also added two assisted blocks and two aces for a match-best 17 points. She hit .333 in the contest. Christin Fisher had a season-best 26 digs and Cara Keturakis added a team-leading 26 assists.

"We had a lot of really great moments, and most of the hitters had great moments, but we also had a lot of lulls," PLNU head coach Jonathan Scott explained. "Central Washington is a very good team and they had us scouted well. The reality is some of our hitters don't have the experience yet to survive the difficult moments."

The D2 West Region Showcase features all the schools that finished third or fourth in the PacWest, CCAA and GNAC last season. There are multiple pods of the D2 West Region Showcase going on this weekend as every team plays their in-region opponents.

"The D2 Showcase is something that needs to happen and we are happy that all three of the conferences from the West Region have bought in," said Scott. "The way NCAA Division II does postseason, we need to be battling against each other and this is a way to make it happen."

Point Loma's next match will be against Cal Poly Pomona at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.

"We have pushed Central Washington out of our memories and have forced the Cal Poly Pomona scouting report into each girls' head. We will see how it goes tomorrow."
