SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's basketball team buried Concordia early with a 30-point first quarter as it rolled to a 93-62 victory over the Eagles on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Â
The Sea Lions (15-3, 9-2 PacWest) get back in the win column after having their nine-game winning streak snapped in their last contest. The win also helps PLNU remains third in the PacWest standings. The loss evened Concordia's PacWest record at 5-5 and dropped it to 7-9 on the season.
Â
Point Loma was on fire in the opening 10 minutes, hitting 11 of its first 16 shots (68.8 percent), including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, to put the game out of reach before the Eagles knew what happened to them.
Roya Rustamzada fueled the first quarter offensive showcase by hitting all three of her 3-point attempts and scoring 11 points. The 30-point quarter was a season-high, and it allowed the Sea Lions to jump in front early and never trail in the game.
Â
"We had a challenging week of practice so we were ready to play this game," said Point Loma's first-year head coach
Lisa Faulkner. "We really put on a ball movement clinic in that first quarter and knocked down our open shots. It was nice to fire away right out of the gates and get a big lead."
Â
Alex Brunk was one of five Sea Lions in double-figures, as she led PLNU in the contest in scoring (18), rebounds (eight) and assists (five). Rustamzada also filled up the stat sheet finishing with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting. She added five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Stephanie Williams scored a season-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.
Â
"Stephanie played awesome and it was really nice to see that from her," said Faulkner. "The whole bench effort was great. It was nice to see Stephanie so aggressive in the second half and hopefully that sparks her for the rest of the season."
Â
Kassidy Gengenbacher came off the bench with 13 points for her eighth straight game in double-figures. She has scored in double-figures in 16 of the Sea Lions' 18 contests this season.
Madison West added 12 points and six rebounds.
Â
Ugochi Anudokem was the only Eagle to reach double-figures in the scoring column. She came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds in 17 minutes. Point Loma held Concordia to 39.6 percent shooting in the game, including just 29.6 percent in the first half as it built a 48-28 halftime lead.
Â
Point Loma shot 57.1 percent in the first half, and finished the game hitting 52.3 percent of their shots. The Sea Lions had just 13 turnovers, compared to 20 for the Eagles, while posting an assist on 22 of their 34 baskets.
Â
"(The assists) are one of the things that really define our team," Faulkner added. "We have a bunch of unselfish basketball players that move the ball so well to find the open teammate. When we can do this we are tough to beat. Today we put up 93 points by just moving the ball and playing together."
Â
The Point Loma women's basketball team will continue this homestand with five more games over the next three weeks. PLNU's next game will be Saturday, Jan. 28 against Academy of Art. The game will tip off at 2 p.m.Â
