Point Loma has just 5 turnovers in victory

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's basketball team had just five turnovers in the contest to earn the largest margin of victory in the coach Ryan Looney era, 75-49, over Notre Dame de Namur on Monday, Jan. 30.

The Sea Lions (12-8, 8-5 PacWest) have won seven of their last nine games to keep hold of sixth place in the PacWest standings. PLNU is a half-game out of fourth place, and three games up on sixth place Azusa Pacific (5-8 PacWest) in the race to the six-team PacWest tournament. The loss sends NDNU to the bottom of the conference standings at 2-11 (4-15 overall).

Vince Boumann, the reigning PacWest Player of the Week, added another double-double to his PacWest-leading total as he scored 20 points (8-of-15) and pulled down 11 rebounds. It is his ninth double-double of the season, and fifth in his last six games. Josh Rodriguez added 16 points, four rebounds and a game-high five assists, all while not committing a turnover.

"Josh was having some issues early in the year turning over the ball, but tonight was his best game taking care of the ball and he did it against some pressure too," said PLNU head coach Ryan Looney. "Vince was very efficient offensively too."

On the other side of the ball, Point Loma had perhaps its best defensive game of the year as it allowed a season-low 49 points. It The Argonauts were just 2-of-16 from behind the arc and PLNU outrebounded them by plus-16.

"I am proud of our effort on that end of the floor," explained Looney. "We have definitely gotten better defensively. A month ago we couldn't have held anyone in the 40s. I am proud of what we got accomplished tonight.

"They did not get a lot of second chance opportunities and that has a lot to do with our success on that end of the floor," he added.

The game was close at the half as PLNU took just a five-point lead (29-24) into the locker room. But after the half, Point Loma came out firing and put up a 22-10 over the first 10 minutes to extend their lead to 18 (52-34). The Sea Lions got up as many as 27 as coach Looney emptied his bench as the crowd roared on the 3-point basket by Emerson Castaneda and the jumper by Hayden Burke.

"I wish every guy could play every minute in a game, but unfortunately that is not the way it is," Looney explained. "This past week every guy's energy and effort were great, which has led to the success we have had the past few games. To give every guy some reward on game day really helps our team moral."

Korey Serna paced NDNU with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The five turnovers are the lowest for the Sea Lions since early in the 2015-16 season (Cal State LA).
